Meat Sector Leads Food Price Inflation

Food prices climbed 4.5% last month, the sixth consecutive month of increases, according to the Consumer Price Index for Food. The increase was led by the meat sector, with the “meat” basket of goods up 12.6% from a year ago while the poultry index was 6.1% higher.

The September data, generated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, follows a 3% gain in August and 2.6% gain in July. The surge marks the fastest level of growth since March 2009.

The rapid increase in food prices has many meat industry analysts worried about the impact on beef demand. The Livestock Marketing Information Center (LMIC) calculates a meat demand index to estimate relative changes in meat demand using the CPI and a base year of 2000.

I just found a local farmer who sells individual cuts of beef and pork and also whole chickens and some of it cheaper than the grocery store. I have a meat goat buckling I could put in the freezer if I need to and will likely have up to four more next year. I’m wanting to get a breeding pair of small pigs soon. Got a ton of heritage variety garden seeds will am going big on that next year as well. Fruit trees also.

Screw this broken system. I’m opting out.

I dunno which is rising faster, gasoline or meat. I thi k they are competing to out pace each other. When Biden stole the election, gasoline was $2.16 around us, it just went up again today, and is now $3.55 a gallon, ourse steaks that used to be around d $7 are now going for $15, hamburger is now as much as steak used to be almost

Then there is the “shrinkfation” going on, get less, pay more. Used to get 16 ounces, the 12 ounces then 10,ounces for things. And prices just kept going up while, product weight went down.

I havsn t bought a 16 ounce soda in a convenience store for years, getting mine onsale in 24 packs instead. Awhile, back was on the road and thirsty,, so stopped to get one- I was speechless when the clerk told me it was 0ver $2.00, and the small single serfe bags of chips now- also over $2.00

But that wasn’t even the worst,, one day I stopped to get some KFC, I wanted 3 pieces, some fries, and a small drink. The clerk told me that will be $22.30 or something like, that. I said “are you serious” she shook, her head and said “I know, but the price had really gone up lately” I said “sorry, but I can buy 4 chickens for that price practically, cancel my order. (I haven’t checked the price of uncooked chicken in awhile in grocery stores, so,maybe I can’t anymore, I dunno- I do know I can buy one already cooked for about $6 though)

This country is headed in a very bad direction. Once prices go up, they very rarely go back down. I remember the price of things like a bag of chips going way up, the gave some lame excuse back then, and said “it’s only temporary”... yeah, no! The prices never went back down cereal too. Kw even bread is climbing quite a bit

No problem, it’s transitory and only a high class problem.

Our local farmers market hasn’t changed the price on fresh Turkeys in a decade. Still $2.79/lb...I ordered it last week.

“to get a breeding pair of small pigs soon.”

For your own eating supply of pork you are way better off buying feeder pigs to raise for the freezer.

Unless you farm and can grow your feed I costs too much to feed a sow/boar year-round.

Buy 4-5 feeders in spring and by fall they will be ready for the freezer.

You can save some on feed by feeding your pigs garden surplus and scraps.

For the most part it will take 600# of feed to finish out each hog.

Kunes thrive on a diet of grass, fresh fruit and vegetables. They differ from commercial pigs in that they do not need high levels of protein. Kunes need a maximum of 16% protein, and by preference a little less. They also need much more fibre than commercial pigs. Kunekune pigs live on grass and vegetables in summer, in autumn this can be supplemented with apples. In the winter when the grass loses its goodness 1 lb. of 16% protein sow and weaner meal mixed with 1 lb. grass pellets and water in to a hot mash can be given. This amount will vary with the condition of the pigs. There is a Pot Bellied pig feed on the market that is suitable for Kunes.

Kunekune is a breed from NZ that can survive on pasture alone. The Maori kept them as edible pets long before commercial feeds. Like the goats, they will be supplemented hay and a little feed in winter. I can also grow winter squash and anything else that stores well for them. They only get up to a couple of hundred pounds for the most part. An extra large male can get to 400lbs. These aren't your typical feeder hogs that get to 6-800lbs in a year. Its also very easy to sell some of them to other people to pay for the winter's feed. I plan to do the same as the Great Pyrenees pair I have. Kunekunes also have a short snout and can't really rut up the ground. I would only have the breeding pair get big. All others would be sold or go in the freezer. When the breeding pair get old, then I'll keep back a sow and get a new unrelated boar for a new breeding pair.

Last year, I spent $100 to supplement the goats and they made a buckling I could easily sell for $300. The dogs will barely pay for themselves with puppies to sell. Depends on the litter size. The Kunekune will easily pay for themselves with piglet sales. With both the goat and pigs, I'll also be able to fill the freezer at some point.

Once I get some more trees but down to get more sunny ground, I'll be able to stockpile forage. I did a small spot this year. A spot where I keep them off all summer and just let it grow. When everything else has quit growing and is gone, let them on that spot and get another month or two of pasture. Fescue works great for that. I also have a high tunnel where I can grow cold weather crops through most of the winter. Most of that can be for animals with some greens for us. I gotta plan man. Been researching for years.

Wednesday is our Food Section day with all the ads....

everyone of them promotes meat on the front page....

I've noticed fewer and fewer meat adds front and center....mostly pork loin...never see steaks....

the cheapest I see for beef is chuck roast for $3.99....winco is a good store out west here and they don't advertise so I guess I'll check them..

Yeah last time I did that those pigs were thrashing around in that freezer, ripped open packages and bags of veggies for steaming.

I finally let them out. So it doesn’t work as well as you make it seem.
