Officials are keeping a close watch on a new descendant of the Delta variant of Covid that is causing a growing number of infections.
Delta is the UK's dominant variant, but latest official data suggests 6% of Covid cases that have been genetically sequenced are of a new type.
AY.4.2, which some are calling "Delta Plus", contains mutations that might give the virus survival advantages.
Tests are under way to understand how much of a threat it may pose.
Experts say it is unlikely to take off in a big way or escape current vaccines.
It is not yet considered a variant of concern, or a variant under investigation - the categories assigned to variants and the level of risk associated with them.

I wonder why the UK seem to be at odds with most of the rest of the world in the direction their Covid cases are going.
Is it a population density thing? The UK is about the size of Minnesota but has a population estimated to be 66,220,000
You could say the same about India. Although their population is much younger compared to the UK.
I wonder is smoking a big thing in India? How about the diet?
I have visited the UK a couple of times. I love the place but it is not exactly one of the world’s healthiest cultures.
I just checked India is doing much better. However maybe winter weather? India is southern hemisphere so it is going into it’s spring while the UK is going into fall

You’re probably onto something b/c our state’s weekly covid briefing today (Arkansas) it was mentioned they expect the vax for ages 5 to 11 to be rolled out next month
Ironic? (or perhaps to be expected?)... that this comes out the day after Bill Gates and some of his other WEF/Davos co-conspirators go to visit Boris at 10 Downing Street.
