SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California public schools and colleges must stock their restrooms with free menstrual products under a bill signed Friday by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
The move comes as women’s rights advocates push nationwide for affordable access to pads, tampons and other items.
California’s latest effort builds on a 2017 law requiring low-income schools in disadvantaged areas to provide students with free menstrual products.
It expands the law to include grades 6 to 12, community colleges and the California State University and University of California systems, starting in the 2022-23 school year. It encourages private schools and colleges to follow suit.
“Our biology doesn’t always send an advanced warning when we’re about to start menstruating, which often means we need to stop whatever we’re doing and deal with a period,” Democratic Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia said of her legislation. “Just as toilet paper and paper towels are provided in virtually every public bathrooms, so should menstrual products.”

And probably in the boys bathrooms
I think they’ve been doing that in NYS for years. I think the big thing is that they have to be in the boys bathrooms, too.
That tiny pitter-patter noise some of you can hear is from Sandra Fluke. Free Ladies products were one of the items on her Must Do List.
And will they put urinals in the girl’s room?
The time has come for separation of school and state.
You just can’t make this stuff up!
I remember going out of state to stand up in a wedding in the 80’s and I remember the unbelief we had finding out condom machines were in the bathrooms.
I actually don’t feel like I am living on this planet but this is all a very bad dream.
Nanny state. Whatever happened to personal reaponsibility?
GMTA
What ever happened to rags?
Yes, Micheal, you nailed it.
My bet is the cheap, commercial grade **** they put in the ladies rooms won’t be anything that women want, even for free.
I’m old enough to have lived through quite an evolution in feminine hygiene products.
You get what you pay for.
A big win for the powerful wall dispenser lobby.
I don’t have a problem with this. They have free toilet paper, paper towels, why not this? Some kid might need them.
They will disappear as fast as they can put they in the dispensers etc. Parents will asking their daughters to steal them for them.
I thought minstrel shows were racist.
