These events are for propaganda purposes.

Guns turned in at the event.
On the bright side, there are 57 less idiots with guns.
Lets just give thieves more incentives to steal cause it’s easier to unload stolen merchandise. I wonder what this will do to street prices?
How do we know that? For all we know they staged those as well.
Those look scary. They could shoot someone.
It has been known to happen.
Some police have added “assault weapons” to displays for a greater propaganda effect, as I recall.
Bethesda Baptist Church? The guns may very well have come from church members wanting some extra personal cash.
Who in their right mind would sell collectable military arms for a fraction of their value? And it looks like a revolver in good condition in one of the pictures. A Smith and Wesson? A Colt? $150? The only person who would part with a nice rifle or revolver for this price would be some bleeding heart liberal who inherited it.
Pax New York begins.
You are close to the truth. A great many come from people who inherited the guns, know nothing about them, are vaguely worried they may not sell them because of legal "problems" and see these events as a safe way to get rid of a "problem" they know nothing about.
Others are purely ideological. There was a person who insisted on turning in a very desirable and collectible Colt Python, to be sure it was destroyed, instead of selling it for thousands of dollars.

57 guns. Probably one guy.
Or a great way to get rid of the evidence.
Wipe it clean. Hand it to the cops. Collect your money. Now weapon to link to a crime.
Genius. Pure genius I tell ya.
It is a television fable.
It happens, but it is rare.
Because they don’t know what they’re worth or do not care.
No different than just tossing a tv that works.
Thankfully that didn’t happen in this case and the Hartford cops were very helpful to her.

“Who in their right mind would sell collectable military arms for a fraction of their value?”
A thief who stole them. “No questions asked...’
And from how many years in law enforcement do you learn that?
These "buy-back" go to cheap to accomplish what they want or to benefit gun owners.
