Abbott make the classic GOP mistake. He thinks by being a centrist, he might not chase away votes. But he never realizes that he is chasing away normal Americans who see no backbone. And the middle of the road types always go democrat.
He moved heaven and earth to move in half of California and New York. he pushed to appease the greens by pushing solar and wind.
Now he has a left moving Texas electorate, and freezing in the dark.
And he was all in on lockdowns.
They already got a guy modeling hot combs in Butte.
Cruz barely campaigned, and in an election year that the DEMs made huge gains in the House, Beto still lost by 2.5% despite 10s of missions of dollars thrown his way.
Additionally, it was native Texans who almost blew it in that Senate race. Beto beat Cruz by 3% with native Texans (51-48%), while Cruz won with transplant Texans by 15% (57-42%). If the right people move to Texas, it shouldn't hurt.

Well your ignorance is showing as Texas does have a PRIMARY election and it is up to the people in Texas to be smart enough to never vote for anyone who has served 2 or more terms.
