Anecdotally, and entirely unscientifically, I think I've discovered one of the greatest motivating factors in the world: The desire to be left alone. I don't mean the desire to BE alone (though as an introvert, that's often the case) but to be LEFT alone.
But politicians won't do that. They spend all their time making sure each and every one of us is on their radar, somehow. In fact, they've insured we can all be pegged as criminals. There are so many laws on the books, we can't help but break one or two every time we inhale. Statistics vary, and no one seems able to give a definitive answer, but by one estimate America has 400,000 laws. I remember reading that 40,627 new laws were implemented in 2010. And yet we watch politicians – over and over again – violate the very laws they impose on us.
So what's up with all the laws? Yes we're a diverse society, but surely we don't need so many rules just to go about our daily lives? Why can't they just leave us alone?
Consider these words from Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" spoken by a character named Dr. Ferris: "Did you really think that we want those laws to be observed? We want them broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against – then you'll know that this is not the age for beautiful gestures. We're after power and we mean it. … There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them.

I like to imagine a world without politicians.
Unlimited government and spending is always the source.
You are the source of their insatiable need for income.
The latest thing I have seen on emails is when folks sign their name and they have the he/him/his thing at the end.

The Founders of our country knew government to be a necessary evil. They tried to limit it and reign in it - to cork the genie in the bottle.
The genie’s been getting loose for a while, now. All you have to do is listen to someone like Nancy Pelosi talk about taxes to understand how ugly and dangerous the genie is.
Wow. That’s profound.
Politicians are not embowered to control innocent men; they can only crack down on “criminals”.
So they keep adding laws until everyone is a criminal.
I remember that from Atlas Shrugged, but it’s good to be reminded.
Not sure (mid 60’s?) when things reversed exactly, into big brother will take care of everything instead of self perseverance.

It seems like there is an election for something every six months. They have overwhelmed us.
MAYBE we could start a party that takes laws away and goes back to Biblical foundations starting with The Big 10!!!
We allow it. We elect them or someone does.
Show me the man and I’ll show you the crime. We are all criminals when it is convenient.
If politicians never passed another law but instead eliminated useless ones and did oversight function to see things are done right they would be busy all the time. Instead, they make more and more laws and allow agencies to make more and more regulations.
The fools here wrote a law to permit medical pot and growing of the same. They also made it legal to grow pot for the rest of the world and it is turning into a horrible mess. Instead of fixing what the fools did they will make more laws to patch around what they have done. Nothing will be made better. Nothing they do improves anything. It is all downhill.
Representatives? Bull, they don’t represent any of us. They are working for themselves on our dime and with our permission. Elections have consequences and mostly they are not good at all. What politicians really need I can’t write but I can hope will happen one day.
That is why the Constitution restricted the government.
Government exists only for the reason to keep people from doing things people want to do and to force people to do that which they do not want to do.
The trick is to keep it to a minimum....basically enforcing the Ten Commandments and little else.
But the genie got out of the box.

We would be stoning a lot of the politicians with the “Do not lie, steal, covet, or commit adultery” commands. The abortionists would also have a millstone for themselves.

Sometimes, one feels that we are just Millimeters from “SHTF”!
Not sure when it was but when I started out in the oil business I could comply with every provision in every operating area by simply doing what I knew was right and keeping in mind the way I wanted to be treated. I left domestic onshore operations in the early-90s and when I came back in the mid-2000s regulations had turned upside down. It was too complicated for me to absorb but even worse the regulations did not make sense. I couldn’t just do the right thing but instead had to comply with niggling and nonsensical regulations so I went back over seas or offshore and never returned.
When did it start? Probably in the late 60s to early 70s. When the senile gang of politicians we have now were coming of age. These boomers have just about killed us. Their predecessors were merely greedy and crooked. These are all of that and controlling.
