Robert B. Reich: What happened to the GOP that stood for limited government?
tribunecontentagency.com ^ | 9/13/21 | Robert Reich

I’m old enough to remember when the Republican Party stood for limited government — when Ronald Reagan thundered “Government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem."

Today’s Republican Party, while still claiming to stand for limited government, is practicing just the opposite: government intrusion everywhere.

Republican states are on the way to outlawing abortions. Texas has just banned abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, before many women even know they’re pregnant. Other Republican states are considering similar measures.

Republican lawmakers are stopping schools from requiring students to wear masks. Iowa, Tennessee, Utah, Texas, Florida, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Arizona and South Carolina have ordered public schools not to demand them.

Republican lawmakers are forbidding teachers from telling students about America’s racist past. State legislatures from Tennessee to Idaho are barring all references to racism in the classroom.

Republican legislators are forcing transgender students to play sports and use bathrooms according to their assigned gender at birth. Some 33 states have introduced more than 100 bills aiming to curtail the rights of transgender people across the country.

Republican lawmakers are making it harder for people to vote. So far, they’ve enacted more than 30 laws that reduce access to polling places, number of days for voting and availability of absentee voting.

This is not limited government, folks. To the contrary, these Republican lawmakers have a particular ideology, and they are now imposing those views and values on citizens holding different views and values.

Oh, little Robert Reich doesn't like the people through their legislatures acting AGAINST democrat agenda items.

That's big government now. Nice trick but it's not going to work.

The people, making laws through their elected legislatures is REPUBLICAN GOVERNMENT.

Little Robert just doesn't like that legislative power exists in other places than the Congress (controlled by democrats of course - the ideal).

And just a reminder, the democrats expected to gain ten or more state legislative chambers in the last election. They didn't gain any, and lost three.

Are we expected to believe that DEMOCRAT legislatures don't "have a particular ideology" and "impose views and values on citizens holding different views and values"?

Laughable.

But to Robert Reich, opposing democrats and pushing back on their agenda is blasphemy, and probably terrorism.

The difference, ya see, is that legislators can be removed for their actions.

Can ANYBODY at OSHA or the Dept. of Labor be removed for their actions???

Of course not. And that’s how Robert Reich likes to “impose HIS views and values on citizens holding different views and values” - with no repercussions whatsoever.

The GOP didn’t even stand for limited government when Reagan was President. People like the Bushes opposed him at every turn.

What a confused little man.
If his preference is for big govt he should be welcoming the GOP into the tent.

No, his argument is about ideology.
In that case he should be supporting federalism where he can move out of a red state and choose to live as a blue state progressive liberal and support his family aborting all the children he doesnt want

The conservative principle of limited government, the conservative principle of individual freedom, has itself ALWAYS been limited. It is limited by the principle that one person’s freedom ends where the next person’s nose begins. You know, like when government confiscates a conservative citizen’s money in order to pay for murdering another citizen’s baby.

You know damn well that Dems control every branch of government, Mr. Reich.
The GOPe is truly incompetent but they are also impotent and powerless. Nazi Pelosi has changed rules as she castrated all of the Republican males to push her agenda through.

I thought Democrats were for big government.

But Reich is a midget.

My wife was 4' 8" and bumped into Reich one time at a bookstore near her work (FDIC). She remarked that he wasn't much taller than her.
