I remember one reported set of quotes from Dick Chenney, after he returned from Saudi Arabia on a mission to get the Saudis to admit what they knew about private Saudi citizens funding Al Queda. Chenney essentially said he was stonewalled - the Saudis gave him nothing, claiming they knew nothing.
My guess is that Saudi agents keeping track of Al Queda operatives here, operated like bad “FBI informants” and had become as much a part of those they were supposedly spying on, so as to keep their “cover”.
And then there is the possibility that the Saudis knew 100% of what was going on, due to their informants embedded with some Al Queda operatives, but the Saudis never related to their U.S. counterparts what they might have seen coming.
