Former Illinois Sen. Adlai Stevenson III (D) has died at the age of 90.

Stevenson's son, Adlai Stevenson IV, confirmed to the Chicago Sun-Times that his father died on Monday in Chicago, adding he had dementia.

“He just faded away,” the younger Stevenson told the newspaper.

llinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) praised the elder Stevenson's "passion for democracy" in a statement following news of his death while offering condolences to Stevenson's loved ones "on behalf of the Land of Lincoln."

Yeah, me neither. But given his name, my guess is he was a career politician.

I think he ran for president at least two times. 1952 and 1956, back when America only had 48 states.

This is Adlai III.

His father, Adlai II, ran for president.

It was Adlai Stevenson II who ran for president in 1952 and 1956, and defeated both times by Dwight Eisenhower.

Adlai Stevenson I was Vice President of the United States under President Grover Cleveland.

His great-grandfather was Grover Cleveland’s vice-president.

His father lost to Eisenhower...twice.

His dad was the one who was attacked in Dallas a few weeks before JFK’s assassination.

This is reason that Cronkite just *knew* it just had to be Right-Wingers that shot JFK.

Yeah.

Lee Harvey Oswald was such a conservative, right wing fanatic.

It was Adlai Stevenson the 2nd who ran in 1952. I was 10 yrs old at the time and my friends mother dragged my friend and me to a local campaign event in Teaneck NJ where I lived at the time.

We handed out Stevenson buttons to the crowd. I wish I had kept a few of them as well as the Ike ones which my brother brought home.

I doubt it. Not sure why you say that. If he were career politician, we’d heard of him. He’s left politics in 1981.

I had forgotten about him. He won a special election in 1980 to replace the late Everett Dirksen. He wound up having to form the Illinois Solidarity Party when he ran for governor in 1986 after a couple of Larouchies won the Democrat nominations for Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of State. He limped across the finish line with about 40% of the vote against Big Jim Thompson.

I remember his election for governor, 1982 against RINO Republican Big Jim Thompson. I took a job helping the NES calculate the election results in the Medinah Temple in down town Chicago (the floor tiles had little swastikas everywhere!). My job was to record the phoned in precinct numbers, and run them over to the key punch operators. The election was VERY close.

There were hundreds of us in that room, and the funny thing was that even though I was getting results first, I had NO idea who was winning. There was no big board, not even any visible computer screens, and certainly no TVs. That was the most extreme example ever of not being able to see the forest because I had to examine each tree one at a time. I had to take the bus or IC back to my dorm and turn on the radio to find out what was happening.
