Could Canada’s Conservative Party win back power?
The Economist ^ | Sept 4, 2021

When justin trudeau called a snap election last month, to be held on September 20th, he wagered that a grateful electorate emerging from lockdown would reward his minority Liberal government with a whopping majority.

The prime minister has done a decent job of dealing with the pandemic (notwithstanding a recent spike in cases). As a share of the population, Canada’s 26,900 confirmed deaths are just over a third of those of the United States. Three in four Canadians aged 12 and older are fully vaccinated.

Yet a flurry of recent polls puts Canada’s Conservatives, led by Erin O’Toole, an indefatigable if uncharismatic campaigner, within striking distance of unseating Mr Trudeau (see chart).

Trudeau won his minority government in the last election with the Tories leading the popular vote.

Don’t count him out.

I wonder if this isn’t a setup anyway or just media spin to get people to read as in clickbait.

That reminds me you can get news stories COVID and otherwise at the blog...

“The prime minister has done a decent job of dealing with the pandemic “

? If he had, there’d be no question of him winning. People are voting against him, because they’re sick & tired of all the lockdowns and gestapo covid rules he’s put in place.

As long as the golden triangle exists between Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal, they can’t really win and they have their arms tied if they do win.

He’s a pretty boy similar to Gavin Newsom. Once the going gets rough their looks aren’t much help.

No it won’t but half the seats are within the Golden triangle. The rest of Canada can be won just from party loyalty.

It appears that Canada’s version of the deep state is planning to install the Conservatives this election. There is little difference between the two wings of the American uniparty but in Canada the difference is indistinguishable.

It looks like Canada is heading for full fascism in the Australian model. Fewer “conservatives” here will stand for their rights if it is their own team taking those rights away.

Yup—Canada’s politics is Orwellian creepy—both parties.

Both are vicious enemies of human liberty.

Isn’t Dominion HQd in Canada? Wait, doesn’t matter, because all the tough talk has fixed that little systemic, global, organized election fraud thing. Whew.

Sadly? Gladly! With the border closed we’re not getting all the “snowbirds” down in Florida. Thank God.

You’d think that closing the border would have have closed a bunch of hunting and fishing camps?

“Sorry about your luck, maybe you will get some income next year?”

“About that record book buck you have been feeding and recording all last year? Wolves snacked down on that, want to buy the chewed up antlers?”

Could Canada’s Conservative Party win back power?

Yes.

And to answer your question, we do not use machines in Canadian federal elections. Paper ballots only, photo ID at the polls, all party reps witness all stages of the vote and the counting.

Latest poll this morning has the conservatives up five points. Trudeau is being shouted down and cannot even hold a rally. The liberals are out of gas with a little over two weeks left.

Obvious power grab elections have a history here of backfiring. On top of that holding one during this whatever you call it was a high stakes gamble since there is no real precedent in recent times. There is also the politician fatigue factor. Stick around long enough and the mushy middle want someone new regardless. They just get bored of looking at your mug endlessly.

For conservatives, it would be easier to get them excited about voting if Leader O‘Toole was actually a conservative… Here are but a few of his recent positions, non-positions and decisions:

• Has stated that he wants to pursue an ambitious ‘climate agenda’...... and worse, he promised to scrap the carbon tax and then went and endorsed carbon pricing.
• Kicked Derek Sloan out when all Sloan did was ask if Theresa Tam worked for Canada or China....
• So far, O’Toole has not come out and clearly said he is against ‘vaccine passports’....just that he is opposed to mandatory vaccinations for federal public servants and travellers.
• Can he not come out and call lockdowns the disaster that they are? Apparently not...
• Trudeau came out and made all kinds of statements that Canada has been engaged in some sort of cultural genocide against indigenous people for hundreds of years. It was a total bunch of crap.... why did O’Toole not call out Trudeau out on this? It seems that his position is that to win elections, one needs to be silent when other leaders are spouting off nonsense like this instead of taking the lead on what is truth?

It unfortunately comes across that when it comes to WuFlu, what O’Toole is essentially saying is “I’m not really disagreeing with the covid policies of the Liberal government.... we could just have rolled them out and administered them better.” In fact, that is what he seems to be saying in a bunch of areas including the environment. This raises the question.... as bad as Trudeau and the Liberals are, in what way would a Conservative government actually change anything? The answer seems to be, nothing...

PPC won’t actually be able to form the next government but at least Maxime Bernier has taken very reasonable positions on most things that matter to conservatives.

Trudeau’s party got a minority of the vote last time with the conservatives winning the popular vote - but Trudeau’s party still won the election, because, of course, it is the individual races that count. So a national poll may not tell much.

There was of course no crowing from the Left about Trudeau “losing the popular vote”
