Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Labor Secretary Marty Walsh say unemployment benefits increased in response to the coronavirus pandemic will expire next month as planned, even as cases of coronavirus are surging with the Delta variant.
However, they said President Joe Biden believes the pandemic exposed "serious problems" with the current unemployment system that require immediate reform, and the president is calling on Congress to address the issue when it returns from recess as part of the budget reconciliation process.
The pandemic-related $300 increase in weekly benefits as well as programs implemented for those who do not qualify for traditional unemployment benefits or have been unemployed long term as extended under the American Rescue Plan are set to expire on September 6.
An estimated 7.5 million people will lose all unemployment benefits when pandemic related programs expire September 6, according to the Century Foundation. It will be the largest cutoff of unemployment benefits in history.

Finally, a small bit of good news.
Good riddance.
Get back to work!
Now that companies are going to get the fascist green light to fire people who do not comply with vaccines... Surprise surprise
Maybe that ransom to the Taliban was bigger than the Democrats thought?
it is certainly well past time to stop the dangerous money printing and mass scale welfare giveaways that are paying people to sit on their rumps at home watching Oprah and The Munsters reruns all day.
Every business in town is begging for people to return to work and we are still experiencing supply chain interruptions due to lack of willing workers in manufacturing, services, and transport.
The roads are choked full with traffic and the shopping mall has so many customers that you can’t get a parking space within two blocks of the stores.
Let’s get the rest of America (excepting for genuinely disabled needy people) off this mass-scale welfare giveaway addiction ... now!
Back to work you lazy scumbags!

Hey, I resemble that comment. I think (hope) biden puylls his head out of the sand long enough to reinstate the benefit.
I am afraid to go back to work. I am conservative, a hard worker, not vaccinated and have been smacked by female coworkers TWICE.
“Finally, a small bit of good news.”
Don’t get your hopes too high, The leeches will come up with plenty of sob stories to justify more extensions.
I’ll believe it on Sept 7th.
yup. They still have time to create a crisis to keep it going.
Oh no…the unemployment benefits won’t be extended to their kids and grandkids…how heartless…
He said the same thing about the eviction moratorium.
“the president is calling on Congress to address the issue when it returns from recess”
This is the plan. End the benefits, which will spur the lazy bums to go out and riot, and then Congress will be motivated to pass UBI.
YOU need a different job.
Expect an extension in two weeks.
What year?

Twice in as many weeks I’ve been told (apologized to) that not enough workers are coming in and the wait lines will be longer and customer service will suck for the time being. Guess we know why......(I already knew)
