A bill aimed at converting commercial properties into residential ones was quietly signed into law late last week by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The measures is meant to increase housing options through a targeted effort. Distressed hotels, shopping centers, and other commercial buildings could all be converted into much needed housing.

Throughout the state there is a lack of affordable, and even median income housing. It’s part of the Housing Our Neighbors with Dignity Act.

Offices, yes. Malls? Not easily except for extreme, probably Goth, night owls.

It would be cheaper and quicker to bulldoze and start over.

hotels would be the easiest. many extended stay hotels already have kitchens in the units.

maybe if they just made it cheaper to build housing in their state by lowering taxes and removing crazy regulations the problem would take care of it’s self?

I think it would be cool to have a defunct Macy’s all to myself.

Shouldn’t this be private sector, where opportunity is weighed against realities of being profitable and returning value to shareholders?

Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood, WA is undergoing a huge refit as a residential center. When Sears closed they basically pivoted and started building a huge residential development, and one right across the street. I have no doubt it will eventually be connected by some walking overpass bridge eventually too.

Amazon has brought this on.

I have seen hotels converted into what amounts to apartments.
Offices might work, too, though they are not plumbed like apartments or hotels. That means a lot of plumbing added or the tenants have use common facilities.
Shopping malls? Maybe as ‘coffin hotels?’ I can’t see any other way to use them as housing.

This has been an idea since commercial properties were and idea. Would I live in a converted mall or office building? No, and not many folks I know would.

Barely any windows in malls, lots of windows in offices.

Who would want to live in the sunlight deprivation of a mall? Dreary nightowls who sleep by day anyway!

Live in an apartment and let government, I mean the landlord, take care of everything.

Whatever happened to the idea of working to get a regular house and a patch of lawn?
