TOKYO (AP) — Hiroshima on Friday marked the 76th anniversary of the world’s first atomic bombing, as the mayor of the Japanese city urged global leaders to unite to eliminate nuclear weapons, just as they are united against the coronavirus.

Mayor Kazumi Matsui urged world leaders to commit to nuclear disarmament as seriously as they tackle a pandemic that the international community recognizes as “threat to humanity.”

“Nuclear weapons, developed to win wars, are a threat of total annihilation that we can certainly end, if all nations work together,” Matsui said.

The United States dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, destroying the city and killing 140,000 people. It dropped a second bomb three days later on Nagasaki, killing another 70,000. Japan surrendered Aug. 15, ending World War II and its nearly half-century of aggression in Asia.

In the lead up to the planned invasion of Japan, the War Department placed an order for 500,000 Purple Hearts.

76 years later, that supply has yet to be exhausted.

And the thousands of people dying in slave labor camps monthly. Those camps in the conquered countries were controlled by the Japanese army.

My Father and his WW II friends never forgot Pearl Harbor - every December 7th The American Legion and VFW Posts would raise the Flag at a local park and play Taps.

Remember Pearl Harbor when you sight down the barrel of your gun.

The Filipinos, Koreans and Chinese probably cheered when Japan got nuked.

I was 12 when WWII ended. I remember that soon after, the Communist newspaper "The Daily Worker" started yelling that we were Bad People because of the bombings. They sent reporters around the world to get foreign opinions in agreement.

The NYC Daily News gleefully reported that when they asked those people who had undergone the Japanese occupation, the constant refrain was "Why did you drop only two?"

And hundreds of thousands of Japanese lives were saved. Curtis Lemay had a plan for the thousands and thousands of heavy and medium bombers sitting idle in Europe.

After this bomb the Japanese Ruling Committee met and decided to continue the war.

After the second bomb the Japanese Ruling Committee met and decided to continue the war but to reach out through Russia and discuss a negotiated surrender.

After Russia attacked Japan in Manchuria, the Emperor stood up and demanded that Japan surrender.

One of the last B29 raids killed the Black Dragons. Military officers who wanted to continue the war.

Also, there are rumors that Japan was close to getting enough fissile material for their own bomb.

As horrible as it was, it saved lives and was the only time Bombing ended a war.

As with Germany, Japan learned the wrong lesson from that war. They believe that war is evi,l when in fact it’s tyranny that is evil. War is sometimes necessary to fight evil.

Best Bar Bet Ever!

The plane that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima was named the ‘Busted Flush’ until the morning of the bombing. That is when Tibbets changed the name to Enola Gay after his Mom.

So, bet that the plane that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima was named the ‘Busted Flush’ and people will bet anything against you.

No mention that China has threatened to annihilate Japan with nuclear weapons. It needs to be repeated that China is a threat to the world and the world needs to take action.

"destroying the city and killing 140,000 people."

Is it me, or does this number seem to increase with every retelling? Biden's inflation is increasing everything.

They convinced the Emperor to surrender.
There were still plenty of Japanese who were ready to resist until the Japanese were extinct. They tried to kidnap the Emperor to prevent him from making his surrender message.

““Nuclear weapons, developed to win wars, are a threat of total annihilation that we can certainly end, if all nations work together,” Matsui said.”

All nations work together ... to do exactly what? Certainly the trigger for our development of nukes was Japan aggression. So Japan itself is responsible for nuclear weapons.

Japan also had a history of brutal aggression hundreds of years earlier when they tried to conquer Korea and China. The Netflix series “Age of Samurai” is worth a watch and describes that era well.
