They aren’t. That’s pretty well established. What we are facing here is a conflict between transportation infrastructure funding and energy/environmental policy. The Federal gasoline tax has been set at a fixed rate since 1993. Between higher fuel efficiency standards and the introduction of electric vehicles, fuel tax revenues have declined even as motor vehicle travel has increased considerably since then.

It’s really that simple.

You are pretending that there are no State gas taxes. Those have risen steadily. We definitely do not need a per-mile tax.
