Bill de Blasio and the Decline of New York City
NRO ^ | 29 July 2021 | John Podhoretz

Posted on 07/31/2021 8:32:32 AM PDT by Rummyfan

New York City is shrinking. Or rather: It was shrinking. Quite a while ago. Then it started to grow. Then it grew dramatically. But after eight years of Bill de Blasio as mayor, it is contracting once again, as the economic and population surge that took the city from the slough of despond to new heights over the course of four decades has been reversed. This is not the result of COVID. It is the result of a disastrous mayoralty and the ideas, prejudices, and idiocies that have animated it. De Blasio’s legacy as he prepares to leave office is just that: a city in decline.

Bill de Blasio has governed with a potent mix of old and new — the bad old and the horrible new. He has pushed wretched new ideas that have blighted the education system and poisoned the streetscape. And he has revivified incompetent policies driven by ideological priors — ideas so long discredited that their failure had been forgotten and had to be experienced yet again by young New Yorkers who weren’t alive when the city was nearly destroyed by them and were therefore unable to heed the warnings of those of us who did live through their nightmarish implementation.

NYC can come back—but it could be decades—or even centuries—to recover from the woke zombie madness.

Nothing does more to capture the essence of NYC’s collapse than the sight of the city’s mayor and the state’s governor begging corporate leaders to force their workers to come back into NYC offices they no longer need because that same governor and mayor shut down their operations last year.

Did they?

It is now clear that the Democrats have no problem with election fraud. Until we have real election reform I no longer trust any election results.

I hope John Podhoretz is miserable in the dangerous hell hole of NYC. He’s an anti-Trumper and called him “disgusting and nauseating.”

You are right on the money!!! Both Democrats, Andrew Cuomo & Bill DeBlasio have destroyed both New York State and New York city for years to come!!! But the real culprits in the destruction of the New York state & city are the voters of the state of New York. they themselves slit their own thoats and probably will do it again, dumb asses that they all are!!!

No tourists, no Broadway shows, no China Town, No little Italy. No great pizza shops in Brooklyn. 66,000 people moved out of NYC in 2020, all them high income finance people who have moved to Florida, in the Miami, Palm Beach area and in the Port St Lucie area also!!! NYC is a ghost town and it dies more with every passing day.

What NYC needs is a conservative Mayor, Curtis Sliwa is the one!!! But NYC voters will vote to screw themselves once again!!! Ask yourselves this question...Who in their right functioning mind would come and visit New York City as a tourist...”Only fools and Idiots would come”!!! Sad...but, sadly these Democrat fools never learn!!!

exploding sidewalk....

Good item. Nice we weren’t standing there at the time.

I remember the Jack Lemmon scene in The Out of Towners movie where a rumbling was followed by a pressured blast upward into the sky of a manhole cover, causing hearing loss for the Lemmon character.

I commute to Brooklyn everyday from Jersey. Over the past 7 years, Bay Ridge has gone from a quanit, almost hipsterish hovel, to a boarded up, homeless infested, smelly, filthy shit hole. Syringes and empty hooch bottles, human excrement and the smell of urine mixed with marijuana smoke prevails. It’s gross.

You are right in the sense that DiBlasio/Cuomo were supported by the voters; they are the symptom, not the problem.

“DiBlasio/Cuomo were supported by the voters; they are the symptom, not the problem.”

Who is “they”? I try to keep up.

Do most voters vote for who they think will give them the most stuff?

Sadly, they do...always forgetting the proven fact.....that there is no such thing a free lunch...period!!! Any New York voter that casts his or her vote for any Democrat is either stoned on reefer, drunk to high heaven...or just simply insane or too dumb to realize, they are voting against themselves!!! Read my lips, folks, Cuomo & DeBlasio have made NY State & NYC a “GHOST TOWN”, and a “Ghost Town” they will stay. New Blood is needed.....Curtis Sliwa for MYC Mayor!!!

In the case of DumblASSio, it was voter apathy that got him elected in both of the 2 elections which brought this sorry commie moron into office. Only about 20% of eligible voters bothered to get off their butts and go vote. I got sick of the filth, the overrunning of my neighborhood with low quality Asians, the horrific lack of street parking, the decay of the infrastructure (crumbling streets, burned out street lights, etc.), the terrible bumper to bumper traffic the minute you got into your car, the sanctuary city garbage, the catch-and-instantly-release no-bail policy enacted by the dumber-than-a-rock libtards comprising the City Council, etc. I left NYC, never to go back. I feel for my friends still living there.

In NYC they certainly do vote for “free sh!t”; enough ghettoization has occurred upstate to deliver it to Cuomo as well.
