State Rep. Jake Ellzey of Waxahachie beat fellow Republican Susan Wright on Tuesday to succeed her late husband, U.S. Rep. Ron Wright, R-Arlington, and pull off a major upset against a candidate backed by former President Donald Trump.

With all precincts reporting Wednesday morning, Ellzey got 53% of the vote, while Susan Wright, a longtime GOP activist, received 47%, according to unofficial results.

I have never like the idea that the wife is owed her husband’s seat. Women should be elected on their merit not their marriage partner.

Family names and legacies are really powerful in politics.

From the article you posted:

Ellzey’s vote was also likely buoyed by Democrat voters.

Stephen Daniel, the Democratic nominee for the district in 2020, said that he would be voting for Ellzey and urged other Democrats to do the same in order “to make sure the Trump-endorsed Susan Wright loses.”

By a six point spread! In Texas! Unbelievable, indeed, and not good. There must be some back story here. Does Texas have an open primary and Dem crossover did this?

looking at 2012/2016, trump didn’t really outperform romney in TX with republicans in general. the difference was with independents, and they apparently don’t vote in primaries.

it’s possible, although not probable, that this could be a sign of things to come in tx.

These things should tell us about the people in the district, however, special elections usually have low voter turnout with result that may not fully represent the district. Split the six points difference in half and you have a 50-50 race. It really suggests to me the GOP voters did not see a ton of difference between the two. Maybe we should not put too much importance in the outcome.

Check and audit for voter fraud.

Then someone needs to run as an independent. Make sure neither Elzy nor the democrat wins the seat.

Liz Cheney has a friend in DC other than Pelosi now.

Yes. I have never understood this. It opens up a primary to meddling by the opposite party.

Texas is an open primary state.

That’s all you need to know. Democrats decided to vote for the Republican candidate.

They cheated.
Again.

Exactly why crossover voting should not be allowed.

Aside from those who endorsed him (likely simply because Trump didn’t), what has this guy done to be “Never-Trump”? I haven’t seen anything. In fact, he did reach out to Trump supporters during the campaign.

We need to be careful with this stuff. Some candidates are still good in a wide field where Trump picks a single endorsement.

Why post every thought? This was a general election between 2 Republicans. All voters could vote.

Liz Cheney still has 145 friends that voted for her to continue in leadership in February.

Most of the House GOP are Bush League Republicans and that is especially true of the TX delegation.
