A National Institutes of Health study has found that using marijuana might increase the risk of suicidal ideation and attempts to self harm, even among those with no history of depression.
The study, titled "Associations of Suicidality Trends With Cannabis Use as a Function of Sex and Depression Status," was published in the journal of the American Medical Association on Tuesday. It involved face-to-face household interviews as part of the 2008-2019 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health conducted by researchers with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The National Institute on Drug Abuse sponsored the research as part of the NIH.
What the researchers found was that men who used marijuana daily and suffered from depression had an increase in suicidal ideation from 14.9% (2008-2009) to 21.9% (2018-2019), and 10.3% (2008-2009) to 17% (2018-2019), among non-daily users.
According to the findings, women who used marijuana also appeared to have a greater associated risk of suicidal ideation than men who used marijuana.

If you smoke a lot of marijuana, the bad news is that you’ll have suicidal thoughts. The good news is that you’ll never actually be motivated enough to do it. :-P
“You ought to concede that just how the human brain functions is simply not known.”
I’ve never claime otherwise, so whats your point?
“People who use marijauna regularly ( and usually advocate its use in others) are not what a scientist would call a non vested, objective observer.”
I have never said that others should use pot, I’ve only stated that I’ve used pot and I have only stated how it affects me. I think people should be free to choose whether to use pot or not. Its none of your business or the governments business what I or others do provided we’re not harming anyone. So again, what’s your point.
I’ve now identified twice where you’ve alluded to something I did, which in neither case did I do. It is telling when one must tell half truths or no truths in an attempt to make a point. I usually call people like that liars.
Also, for those who’ve never even tried pot, who are you to tell me or other pot smokers what it does and how it affects us with such a level of confidence that you people think your claims are infallible. Truely pathetic, especially when one realizes how politicized science has become, to think that any mainstream science or government sponsored study/report about the effects of pot smoking would even begin to be truthful is ridiculous at best. All of the mainstream/government sponsored scientists who study this are given marching orders to prove how dangerous pot smoking is, the government will not allow studies about the positive effects of pot smoking and THC treatments can be, for Alsheimer patients, patients with chronic pain, as cancer treatments, THC is known to destroy certain types of cancer cells without harming the healthy cells around it. Of course none of the studies that prove this will ever be allowed to see the light of day mainly because THC treatments and smoking pot are things big pharma will not make money from and neither will the politicians that get millions of $ in kickbacks from the pharma industry to keep things this way. One only needs think of the recent shelving of Hydroxy and Ivermectin which cost about 1 penny per dose versus Remdisivere (SP?) which Fauci and many other government officials were invested in. Like always follow the money and it will usually lead you to the truth.
“Revenue Enhancement” is much more important to the politicians right now.
The coronavirus bailout funny money for the states can’t be spent after December 31, 2024.
Note that Virginia and New York are rolling out legal pot in 2024.
“I don’t care what you do”
Thank You, mind you’re own business, as I mind my own, and we will get along just fine.
Everyone already knows the mentally ill should not smoke pot.
Or drink whiskey.
You sound a bit touchy. Simply underscores my point that people who use marijuana regularly are not objective, non vested observers. They neither have an objective understanding on just how the drug is really affecting them, nor do they have a good understanding of the drug itself.
I see we have a lot of stoners coming out today.
Yeah, you think about it, but you are too laid back so you just hang out instead.
Ignore it. Whoever funded the study dictates the results. I know several PTSD vets who say it helps them. I don’t do it (it does nothing for me) but I believe in everybodys right to take natural herbs and vitamins (over Big Pharma and tyrannical Govts. objections).
I infused it into little pieces of chocolate. I finally got my wife to try it. She had the best nights sleep in more than two years.
I am not an advocate of sitting home during the days and smoking it. But I don’t advocate drinking during the day either.
But…in some cases the helpfulness of cannabis is clear and literally free (if you learn how to grow it.) it’s better than Atavan or Xanax.
How does it compare to alcohol in the respect? I betcha drunks are more suicidal then potheads.
Well, I’m so happy that you know what I’m thinking all the time, you really are an amazing intellect, obviously just ask, you’ll tell us.
I simply stated my opinion on this issue as I have personally experienced and thus as I see them. Furthermore, I would argue that I am the one critically thinking, not you. I am not painting with a broad brush as you are; you seem to assume absolute infallability in your claims about other people and the effects of pot smoking on them, I’ve only know how it affects me and have stated such. I’ve limited my responses to how pot affects me, and what studies that were made to see if there were positive effects and medical treatments pertaining to people smoking pot and using THC as a possible treatment, that I’ve seen and read about.
Also, no, I am not touchy about what you believe, even in your absolute ignorance of who I am and the hours of research I do on subjects such as this that interest me. I don’t give a damn what you claim about me or my beliefs, you have not a clue, but of course you’ll claim to be an expert.
In other words, to make this simple for you, what I’m saying to you is this; you’re the kind of narrow-minded, self deluded fanatic I choose not to associate with. Good-Bye.
THC is a strong dopamine agonist (increases dopamine).
That is its primary effect on the brain.
I do get a kick out of these posters though, it's as if anyone who smokes cannabis does nothing else but sit around smoking weed all day.
Somehow I luckily escaped the radiation but the chemo and 9 hours of surgery damn sure left a mark.
“I know several PTSD vets who say it helps them”
I personally know 3 of them.
All wound as tight as a 2 dollar watch.
After a couple of tokes, functional.
Well its good to see that the drugs you introduce into your brain, while they may have affected your rationality and capacity to comprehend, have not yet devolved you to the dull, oblivious “whatever man” level. You still have a capacity for anger which is a good thing.
This only means that you don’t have a correct understanding of the statistical method.
Don’t take life so seriously, man :)
