US Job Openings Jump to Fresh Record High of 9.3 Million

U.S. job openings rose in April to a fresh record high, along with the number of people who voluntarily left their jobs, underscoring fervent labor demand and turnover as businesses emerge from pandemic-related restrictions and the economy strengthens.

The number of available positions climbed to 9.3 million during the month, the highest on data back to 2000, from an upwardly revised 8.3 million in March, the Labor Department’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, or JOLTS, showed Tuesday. The increase in vacancies was broad.

The number of people who voluntarily left their jobs increased to 4 million in April, while the quits rate rose to a series-high of 2.7%. The figure suggests workers are growing more confident in their ability to find other employment.

While companies are hiring as the economy reopens, child care obligations, lingering health concerns, skills mismatches and enhanced unemployment benefits have kept some Americans from returning to the labor force. The number of vacancies exceeded hires by 3.2 million in April, the biggest gap on record.

Hiring challenges have been so acute in recent months that half of all U.S. states have announced plans to phase out federal unemployment insurance programs early in an effort to encourage people to look for work. Meanwhile, employers have been offering bonuses, raising wages and adding benefits like health insurance to attract workers.

The latest jobs report from the Labor Department showed payrolls increased by 559,000 in May after a 278,000 gain in April, which suggests that hiring efforts started paying off last month. Still, the payrolls figure came in below estimates and leaves the labor market 7.6 million jobs short of pre-pandemic levels.

Well, as states stop paying people to not work, those jobs will start getting filled.

The midsized company I work for is at 90% of desired staffing level. We were supposed to have two people start Monday and both did not show up (today either). Both jobs were entry level, you might as well forget about our skilled positions being filled.

What we’re experiencing is still the Trump economy.

Other than destroying thousands of energy jobs by stopping the Keystone Pipeline project, Biden has thus far, not (yet) put forth any policies ( tax, regulatory, etc. ) that has changed any of the previous policies.

But give it time, that could happen by 3rd quarter of this year unless Republicans stop what ever nonsense they are planning.

No doubt the democrats will claim it Biden’s success.

ALWAYS say no, Trump’s success.

Trump got the vaccines in record time that made the blue states ease restrictions. Hate the vaccine or not, but once available and people started getting it (150 million plus), the democrat tyrannical governors could hardly keep the lockdown scam going...

Us oldsters that come from a “fix it ourselves” age do have a bit of a leg up. I’ve replaced the motor capacitor on my HVAC before. But anything that has to do with the pressurized system is outside my area of being able to do squat.

People better flock to those jobs if they want any semblance of living. To live in my 3 bedroom 2100 square foot home in Florida, it costs me $2,077 a month. Does not include food, car insurance, gas, phones, entertainment. Just literally the cost of running the house for a month including mortgage of 1156 a month. So people better get serious about working cause living in not cheap!!!!!

It is indeed strange to see the stock market still up and people taking profits in anticipation of higher capital gains tax later making profits today more sensible. Spending those dollars there a real estate pricing booms in a large number of locations. However, the lumber price quintuple, the new car drought due to long term chip shortages are really causing home a car prices to spike like crazy due to availability. All this potential spending and it is being funneled into narrow inflationary avenues.

I’m selling my vacation home, so I am greatly benefiting from this situation as a retired senior, but holy cow, what a weird market out there.

I’ve got a Scion FR-S sitting in my garage since April of 2020 and WFH started. I put 185k on it driving 150 miles a day on my commute. Now it is LITERALLY just driven to church every Sunday by an old man (to keep the seals fresh).

I kept meaning to sell it but I needed to get new headlights (way too yellow). Waiting has paid off. I might get decent money just selling it to a dealership. :)

See, all the more reason to bring in 9.3 million of those hard working illegals along with their 6 kids, 14 cousins and the in-laws.

Don’t forget their Mullahs.

They’re going to need a lot of spiritual guidance and jihad advice, once they’ve moved to the land of the greedy white infidel!

......from another “oldster” (mid-70s now....) I know what you mean...but this A/C system goes back to the early 1990s so it is probably ready do be junked....!! but I agree; over my lifetime I have learned how to so many things around the house so as to not having to “give it out..” as my late father-in-law used to say.....

Heh. My last HVAC system gave out at almost exactly the ten year mark.

My wife had a stroke of luck about three years ago. She was visiting her sister in Chicago for a week and the water heater gave out.

I replaced it myself and discovered the magic of Pex pipe and Sharkbite. For her it was like it never happened.

Holy cow! I wish I could sell my 2006 scion xB, but though it drives like a new car at 229k miles, I can’t get anything for it because it has extensive deer damage to the front. I use after market bolt on LED lighting on one side. In most states I’d get pulled over for that, but nobody cares here in Kentucky. I’ll just drive it into the junk yard.
