Colonial Pipeline reportedly paid almost $5 million to the hackers responsible for the cyberattack that forced the shutdown of its gas infrastructure.
Colonial Pipeline paid the ransom amount using cryptocurrency within hours of the attack, highlighting the pressure the company faced to get gas flowing again to customers on the East Coast, according to Bloomberg.
This contradicts reports from earlier this week that the company had no plans of paying a fee to decrypt important data files and help get the gas pipeline up and running again.

Well, this will certainly stop anyone else from doing anymore hacking. Take that!
Now our gov needs to track down the hackers and eliminate them.

These people are no different than pirates and should be treated as such.
After our Special Forces capture them and bring them in from all over the world, we should tar their bodies, place them in cages, and hang the cages outside data centers and computer stores.

Far from it. I am sure it happens at an individual “random” level, but energy companies and hospitals are targeted victims, because...they will pay.
Which government organization did this to Colonial? CIA? NSA? FBI (Stasi)? DoD? Or, which one of the government organizations put out a contract on Colonial so they didn’t have to do it directly?
I suggest the company commission a team to find fix and finish them.
Our govt won’t.
Or elect them to high office so they can learn from the pros.

How can they not recover from backups and was the SCADA equipment somehow infected? If so, why are valves and pumps seemingly running on Windows?

Our current government would fund a study to determine how the hackers were misgendered, deadnamed, and discriminated against by white supremacists, causing them to lash out in protest by stopping the pipeline.
They paid $5 million? I guess that’s okay, as long as the hackers don’t do it again.
