On Sunday, 2 May 2021, at about 12:30 p.m. this correspondent was in a Walmart in Yuma, Arizona. It was a mission of mercy.
After church, a visit to a friend in the hospital was in order. I had delivered him to the emergency room three days before. The friend desired another key for his residence, so more people could help to care for his dogs and do other needful things.
At the Walmart, I stopped at the firearms and ammunition section to take pictures of the lack of product available. I had a cart with some canned goods and a loaf of bread, which had been picked up on the way to obtain a duplicate key. I took the pictures and turned to retrieve the cart.

The cart was gone. Another cart was nearby, but it was not mine. I said: “Where did my cart go? It had a loaf of bread in it.”
Another customer pointed down an aisle to the left. “There is a cart with bread in it”, he said.
25 yards away, walking away from us, was an above-average-sized middle-aged man, with a cart with a loaf of bread in it. I speed-walked up to the man, looked at the cart as I approached, and ascertained it contained the items I had selected. I was openly carrying a Glock 17 in a Fobus retention holster.
I touched the man on the upper arm, from his left rear, and said: “Excuse me. I think you have the wrong cart by mistake.”

Open carrying is for idiots. The last thing I want is for someone to know I’m armed.
First mistake: Setting foot in Walmart for anything.
> Open carrying is for idiots. <
I wouldn’t go that far. In some states concealed carry requires a permit, but open carry does not. (In my opinion, it should be the opposite.)
Leftists would have expected a shootout in aisle 5. I expected a friendly discussion about sidearms.
That's your choice.
Mostly I carry concealed, but sometimes I WANT to make a point, and when I do open carry, there will be at least two visible weapons, one will be a S & W 357 Magnum in a shoulder holster and another will be on my hip, maybe a 9 MM or whatever else I want to carry.
You have to know that open carry may make you the first target in the event of a planned event, but I'm pretty sure that open carriers know this.
I prefer concealed but calling open carry people idiots? Really?
“Open carrying is for idiots. The last thing I want is for someone to know I’m armed.”
I like the open carry idea. But there will be some idiots out there use it for intimidation. BLM in protest recently is opening carrying trying to intimidate people. In some cases that open carry has turn into pointing the weapon at people.
I prefer not to let people know I am carrying. There should be no requirement to have a concealed weapons permit, it does nothing for public safety.
Most criminals who carry concealed weapons don’t have a permit or care about having a permit.
It is far more effective at restoring Second Amendment rights than concealed carry.
Concealed carry is for idiots. The last thing I want to look like is an easy mark/soft target for criminals.
I’m not going to diss on open carry but I wouldn’t do it. It makes you an object of attention.
Heh!
I agree. However the “Mask Mandate” gave me the opportunity to
fulfill childhood fantasies. With a smile on my (masked) face, I would raise my shirt up to behind the butt of my gun so it was exposed and walk in. Usually wearing sunglasses.
Childish? Hell Yes.
Then forget about buying anything in about half the towns in the South, unless you want to drive another 30 miles.
> It [open carry] is far more effective at restoring Second Amendment rights than concealed carry. <
True that. I’m not really against open carry, but I have two problems with it.
1. Some folks get alarmed and upset by guns. And that will always be the case. So to help keep society calm, I prefer concealed carry. Side note to the FBI snoops: I’m speaking hypothetically here. All my guns were lost in a boating accident years ago.
It’s kinda like with erotic pictures (porno, if you wish). The 1A gives you the right to view it. But you probably shouldn’t pin an erotic picture on your shirt and then go walking around town.
2. I myself am not alarmed or upset by guns. But I live about a quarter mile from a school. If I see a guy with a slung rifle walking towards that school, I’m gonna call the police. If that guy is just carrying his weapon as a 2A right, better he should carry concealed.
See what I mean?
I see. The author built up the drama to show that gun owners can reasonable with one another.

The first thing a criminal will do when robbing a store is look for the guy with the open carry. Eliminate the threat then rob the store.
If you get into a fight with a group of people, you take the most threating bully first.
I have carried for more than 26 years, and any problems with it is when the piece "prints" (is seen to be under) the concealed clothing. It is then that gun-shy observers begin to make trouble for you. My state is by law always been open carry. Until the cops keep harassing you, on complaint of other citizens, that is.

I worked in a western themed amusement park as an “actor”. It would shock you how many people tried to yank the gun out of my holster to play “Stick ‘em up”.
Note: We had real pistols that had been modified.
