Sixty-four percent of Americans say social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are doing more to divide the nation than bring it together, according to an NBC News poll released over the weekend. Only 27% say that they do more to bring the country together...In the latest poll, those saying the platforms do more to divide the U.S. includes a majorities of Republicans (77%), independents (65%) and Democrats (54%). Other groups saying social media does more to divide the nation are whites (70%), Latinos (56%), seniors (71%) and young adults (61%).

Social media is cancer.
When you think about it ... Social Media, by the very way they are set up, are the ultimate tool for bullying
The way everyone is linked together encourages a kind of “group-think”, so whenever a different/outside view or perspective is raised, it’s immediately attacked by the group, who pile on ... lots of piling-on is now the hallmark of Social Media, anyone can attack with impugnity and then hide behind their anonymous internet profile ... perfect for the cowardly bullying type
Social Media are probably the worst forum ever invented for having any kind of meaningful or open discussion, it’s actually making its users dumber!!
Social Media is also really handy for criminals to organize their activities, like the professional protesters that always show up at every “spontaneous” anti-cop demonstration

True. In the ‘90s, we studied the decay of social media: mostly newsgroups and e-mail lists back then. Many of them were collaborations without revenues and for other purposes. Counterproductive controversy attracts viewers, and groups of trolls will pay to play.
I see one positive. We’ve learned much more about the people known by labels such as sociopaths, psychopaths, anti-social personalities and narcissists. We’ll be recognizing and avoiding them more quickly in person.
As for the Internet and the way it is regarded and used, I’m guessing that will change, too.

NBC News and other Democrat controlled media outlets spent 4 years tearing this country apart. They don’t like that even after 2 impeachments they couldn’t destroy Donald Trump or his supporters.
A lot of what you say is true.
Yet, it is possible to use Social Media for good things. Personally, I use it to keep in touch with lots of old friends. Could I email them? Sure. But It would be a lot more difficult to communicate.
The problem are:
1. The idiots who use social media (and they are legion)
2. The Big Tech masters who use it to spread an agenda
Even though many of us don’t consider it so, FR is a form of social media too.
Hopefully, SM will evolve into a more positive form. But its foolish to think you can un-invent it.
These social networks work hard to become the only speech platforms for people to use for communication and then they believe they have the right to control every word you say…..and to shut you up if they don't like your thoughts! They have an agenda for the future and we have no right to speak up or oppose it?
Can you imagine the day they take over Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T…… your phone services? And suddenly block you from using your phone to speak your mind because they're monitoring your calls and didn't like something you said in a conversation? That's what they're doing now on their social media pages.
It's time to contact our Senators and Representatives and start the legal challenges to this!
Yes the platforms must be turned into utilities immediately.
Its not social media. Its CNN, MSNBC and the NYT that are really doing it. Yes they quote twitter all the time. But if twitter did not have cable news as a megaphone, nobody would notice all the garbage written there.
