House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) is openly supporting Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) to replace Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) as House Republican conference chair, according to a spokesperson.
Why it matters: Scalise's public endorsement of Stefanik marks a new escalation in House Republicans' internal feud over Cheney, who voted to impeach Donald Trump for inciting the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and has continued to criticize the former president.

Based on that criteria alone then Liz Cheney is a better friend.
There are 21 Republican women in Congress. The odds are that among those there is one who is far more conservative than Stefanik and a better choice.
Because the establishment of the GOP never supported Trump...
There is NOTHING Cheney has said or done they disagree with...
This is theater to calm the base that they really don’t care about at all
There's a lot going on here behind the scenes.
She's not the best at all from our perspective but another woman who may be better will not be pushed forward at this time. I'd love to see Cheney gone. Her impeachment vote is unforgiveable.
Depends on how you define RINO I guess. I would say that voting record is a good indicator. Based on that alone then Cheney is the four and Stefanik is a nine. Stefanik may talk the talk when it comes to Trump, but she doesn't walk the walk when it comes to conservative legislation.
This is not the time to placate moderates. Cheney has to go, that is beyond dispute. Replace her with a hard-core, rock-ribbed, conservative woman and not a squish.
I’d hate to be a #2.
Chosen by who? The GOP establishment? That would be my fear.

Why not? Isn't that the question we should be asking?
I read this morning that Stefanik is the visible entrant. The dark horse (if a female is required) is the much more conservative Debbie Lesko of Arizona.

I understand your point but it’s unfortunate that we’re not going to be able to have people that agree with us all of the time.
She’s not where she needs to be but I was impressed with her standing up for Trump. She’s not a full-time RINO like so many of them.
I do support “DITCH LIZ!!!” 100%.
I agree with your perspective. I'm just resigned to it - at least for this topic. Taking down Cheney would be so lovely.
Ha ha. As if policy or principle had anything to do with it.
Just don’t say it’s a personality cult.
“”she only reached her position because of her husband’s status””
Curious - What is her husband’s status?
Oh brother. She was the protege of Ryan, Boehner, Rove, Kristol, and Bush 2. She was in DC straight outta Harvard and is as much a swamp creature as any of them. I don’t trust her a bit. I knew she was being groomed last year. Manchurian candidate in heels.
Whatever.
Congress is run by Californians and New Yorkers.
I like Stefanik for her energy and her takedowns of Schiff, but I hear she’s a NY conservative.
In Stefanik you have someone who agrees only 75% of the time. Surely we can do better?
She’s not where she needs to be but I was impressed with her standing up for Trump. She’s not a full-time RINO like so many of them.
She's a part time RINO then. So why not go with a full time Conservative?
How do we change it? We change it by withholding any contribution to the GOP and sending our money to Trump. That’s why this is happening. The GOPe got the message that Cheney was poison to their fundraising. Too many people responded to their telephone fundraisers “Not while she’s in the leadership”.
Well your wish “ain’t gonna happen.”
You can keep Liz.
Of course it isn't because we have 'leaders' like McCarthy and Scalise running the House. No spine, no vision, no courage. So bound up in the GOP establishment way of doing things that they make the same mistakes over and over. And this is the team that's supposed to win the House back next year?
It’s worse than that. Stefanik has a lifetime ACU rating of about 44, making her one of the most liberal Republicans in the House by that measure. In some ways, she is more in line with moderate Democrats than the average Republican. Cheney has a lifetime rating of about 75: not the most conservative member of Congress by any means, but she is in the conservative mainstream of her party.
If Stefanik is more acceptable than Cheney, then that means personal loyalty to Trump has replaced conservatism as the standard for the Republican Party.
The two are not incompatible. Why isn't Jackie Walorski being bandied about as a replacement? Indiana congresswoman on her fifth term. A 94.1% rating in fivethirtyeight.com. Signed on to the amicus brief for Texas v. Pennsylvania. By all indications a solid conservative Republican congresswoman and strong Trump supporter. Why not her instead of a squish like Stefanik?
