New law reduces sales tax on hydrogen vehicle purchases in Washington

Washington solidifies goal to end sale of new gas-powered cars by 2030

A bill to promote hydrogen-powered vehicles is now a state law.

“Giving residents more access to purchase greener vehicles is one more way we can work together to lower greenhouse gas impacts across the state,” Gov. Inslee said, as he signed the bill.

Senator Brad Hawkins sponsored the bill, SB 5000, which creates an eight-year statewide pilot project for the reduction of sales tax on purchases of fuel-cell electric vehicles.

“It’s had a long journey through five different committees, but it’s definitely generated a great deal of conversation throughout the process, and hydrogen as an issue has gained a lot of support,” he said.

Hawkins’ hydrogen vehicle legislation had bipartisan support and nearly 30 co-sponsors. It passed the Senate 49-0 in March and the House of Representatives 93-4 on April 10.

Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers because that is the future.

Unfortunately this is Beyond Stupid. I wonder if any of these lawmaker people asked themselves where the nearest Hydrogen Fuel station was ?

Hint, it is in another Country.

Hydrogen has a Atomic Number of 1.

It passes (leaks) through most anything.

We have a perfectly good, mature, geographically dispersed, highly optimized system to get oil out of the ground, refine it, make gasoline (and many other byproducts), deliver it to countless “gasoline stations” all over the country where you can safely put incredible amounts of potential chemical energy in your tank in a few minutes. Then you burn it in highly optimized, very clean, and very efficient internal combustion engines to power your car.

There is NO REASON on God’s Green Earth to throw all that away. All of that was created by millions of brilliant minds operating independently driven by the free market and the profit motive.

There is NO WAY “industrial policy” by pointy-headed liberals will ever come up with anything better. Just look at the Soviet “Five Year Plans” for an example of how well central planning works.

This is a no-brainer for Wash DC.

Subsidize electric vehicles.
Penalize petroleum vehicles.

At some point most folks will be forced by the economics.

I don’t drive that much, but I am worried when they start forcing us to give up nat gas for home heating, cooking, and hot water.

It can be mixed and held by borax and other solutions, with no leakage.
I’m not advocating hydrogen, just pointing it out.

The City Council in our little town here on the San Francisco Peninsula is beavering away to stop all future natural gas hook-ups in new construction. I don’t think they are going to require you to pull out your natural gas hook-up in a remodel...YET. They did a survey of the citizens, but I haven’t seen the results. I expect they will get the results they want to get. Plus, this is such a liberal town that it would probably pass if put to a vote.

The irony is that California is massively short on electric generation, shut down all of its nuclear plants, and prohibits the importation of any coal power.

Back in the 80s I had a house with a heat pump.
Bad news, unreliable and expensive to run.
Not to mention blowing so much cool air in the winter, barely above the setting temp, then the resistance kicks in and the meter spins like a top.

When I took Thermodynamics from an actual ex-NASA scientist in college, hydrogen cars was one of the crackpot examples we explored. He loved working us through every possible idiot idea, wherein we not only looked at the science (windmills, for example) but calculated all the costs. (Did you know windmills kill amazing amounts of birds?) Nothing, and I mean nothing, came close to the efficiencies and low costs of what we already have. As I recall, one of the drawbacks of hydrogen was that a huge, heavy tank was required to get the same amount of energy you would get from 20 gallons of regular gas. There were other issues as well. As someone pointed out, hydrogen can leak past almost everything you would use to seal it. Also, imagine a wreck where there’s a significant leak and you’d have one heck of a blowtorch. High pressure hydrogen would be more dangerous than gasoline.

The central planning committee of the politburo put forth this idea?

No, hydrogen vehicles will never made it. Simple physics.
Basic problem - there is no free hydrogen on Earth. All hydrogen on Earth is tied up in molecules like water or natural gas. To split hydrogen from water you need more electrical energy than the hydrogen will eventually deliver (2nd law of thermodynamics!).
To get the Hydrogen from hydro carbonates, you will also loose badly on energy budget, as you get more energy by just burning the whole hydro carbonate, not by stripping hydrogen from the hydro carbonate. Again, there is no way around the 2nd law!
If we could somehow steal hydrogen from the Sun, where there is a lot of it in free form, now you are talking effective power source.
Guess when that will happened?

Isn’t a lot of Hydrogen “held” in gasoline?

Someday, gasoline will be completely synthesized (possibly) from electrically driven processes.

Then, people’s heads will explode.

Noted.

Was not able to find out the CF of H contained in one kg of solution. Weight and range will factor in usability of such vehicle.

Read that the release of H from a slurry involves heat and water.

Will be interesting times when the Santo (Texas y'all) VFD responds to such a vehicle crash on IH-20 and they throw water on the burning wreck.

But the press release makes it seem so simple...
...hydrogen can be created from a process that separates the hydrogen and oxygen molecules in water. The Douglas County Public Utility District plans to use its surplus hydropower to do just that...
It's nothing but "a process." How hard can that be? I'll bet even Poindexter and Peabody could do it, and cheaply, too.

Actually, if you just look at the energy content of material, Hydrogen is actually pretty lousy energy source.
If you look at the energy content of the Hydrogen by mass, it is pretty good, but only because Hydrogen is very light.
If you look at the molar energy content (basically content of the molecule of a substance), Hydrogen is quite lousy.
The current global warming idiots do not understand that. They are looking on the energy content of an unit of mass e.g. (J/kg).
But, scientifically, you should look at energy content of a molar mass M (J x mol/kg).
In this case Hydrogen is very lousy energy source.

Hydrogen is a real b!+c# kitty of an element to handle. Not only is it very likely to leak out of virtually any coupling through which it passes, it is highly reactive and forms hydride compounds with just about most metallic elements, and the least spark around a leak in an atmosphere that contains 20% oxygen is very likely to result on one tremendous flash explosion.

But it does get bottled up and sold as an industrial chemical.
