The Roman Colosseum is one step closer to having a floor, which will let visitors see the ancient amphitheater from a gladiator's vantage point for the first time in two centuries.

Colosseum Gets A Good 2,000-Year Scouring The famed Italian landmark dates back to the Flavian dynasty of the first century, and was originally used to host spectacles like animal hunts and gladiatorial games. It's been without a complete floor since the nineteenth century, when archaeologists removed it to reveal the network of structures and tunnels underneath.

WHY?

See the very end there in the pic? A piece of floor. Go there, if you want to see.

Sounds like a huge waste of scarce resources when there is so much needing attention/restoration/preservation.

[It might also be helpful to wait for a huge influx of tourist $$’s]

The short answer is: earthquakes and popes, in that order.

Being able to see the “basement” was a highlight of our visit to the Colosseum. The visit would have been diminished if it had been covered up. Perhaps this is meant as a way of increasing the number of people who pay for guided tours of the inner spaces.

We can start to worry when they put in the new seats and vendor booths.

I have read that they had a way to flood the arena and stage small naval battles. Wonder how they kept the water out of the underground tunnels.

They should convert the floor into a huge trampoline, charge folks to use it.

Monument to human art and ingenuity?
Monument to human bloodthirsty curiosity and pleasure is more like it. And what we’ll invent to satiate it.
