Shocking new video shows two Colorado cops under investigation for their violent arrest of an elderly women with dementia laughing and cheering - and giving each other a fist bump - as they watched body-camera footage of the altercation hours later.
They were celebrating all while the 73-year-old woman was suffering in a jail cell, the photos reveal - disheveled and seeming to lose consciousness several times.
Loveland Police Officers Austin Hopp and Daria Jalali arrested Karen Garner on June 26, 2020, after she left Walmart without paying for a candy bar, a can of Pepsi and a t-shirt totaling $13.38.
City officials haven't apologized to the woman or her family, according to the Loveland Reporter-Herald. The footage of the arrest went viral on social media after its release earlier the month in the wake of a new lawsuit against the department.
The suit says during the first hour Garner was in custody, she said: 'They hurt my shoulders' 22 times and 'They hurt my wrists' 13 times. She wasn't given any medical treatment.
A statement from the attorney representing Garner in a federal civil rights lawsuit against the department said supervising officer, Sgt. Phil Metzler, who also is under investigation, knew Garner was injured and allowed her to be kept in a holding pen with no care.

Thanks. I wish I could remember where I read that.
I was with a friend when he was taking rental applications at a house. One of the applicants was a five foot nothing cutie in her thirties, in police uniform. Someone asked how she’d deal with uncooperative perps. She said -“That’s what the gun’s for.” A command presence and some middle ground on the use of force spectrum would be nice. Not sure if she’s still around.
Wal-Mart surveillance video was released. Showed Garner walking with 3 employees and she pulled down one of their masks. That’s supposedly reason they called police.
She was old. Jail for the one who broke her arm, firing and lawsuits for the others involved. We don’t need psychopaths doing police work. And BTW, CO stinks.
Yeah this does speak to a bad culture, they should investigate these two and go back to their prior arrests. The last thing you need is to let this slide as that will only embolden them to do worse.
So I guess you want to defund the police?
Gee, want to switch sides and join BLM
He was the little snotball the teacher put in charge of the class when she went out for a smoke. I’ve actually defended him once or twice which was obviously an error in judgement on my part.
What’s the average city government payout lately? 27 million? Sounds about right for this case. No apology needed, just the check please.
Stealing less than $50 worth of goods is a petty offense in Colorado. Worth a fine - if the store owner prosecutes. According to the bodycam tape audio, Walmart was not prosecuting.
Which begs the question, who dropped the dime on a senior citizen who left the store with no product and who presented herself in the store as confused, and, who had a ‘credit card’ on her person (said on audio), that, had she been able to understand spoken word, may have paid for that candybar and coke?
DA decided not to prosecute.
Pretty sure I’m talking to one right now.
—just a kindly heads up for the future, when your memory fails, as it will, it will be most helpful if you start writing lists of things important enough to remember. Don’t be concerned if you can’t remember if you started a list, just start a new one. And make sure that you hide money, in not obvious places, like inside a spare roll of toilet paper in the knitted cozy, or under a lamp with a placemat. Don’t fret about finding any of again. It won’t matter to you anymore anyway. But whoever family and friends or random people will find all and know that you passed into the beyond, without perhaps even remembering your name.
One of crazy aunt’s fiinest days was arguing about keeping an expired grocery store check id card. The store had been closed for a dozen years.
An early sign of dementia is classic arguing, and perhaps fiercely so, to little things, what many others, still sane, would even refrain from commenting.
Enjoy every day being Your birthday.
She pulled down an employees almighty mask.
Still not a reason to have the police go after her. Not that I believe them. I think it is CYA time for Walmart.
Why did this dumb 26 year old cop ask her
“ Do I need to arrest you?”
I saw it on the Wal-Mart surveillance video. Still crazy to call the cops.
Truth be told, i’m fine. I have Grace and Redemption and every day is a blessing.
Sometimes dementia patients suffer from deep vein thrombosis, as did my wife’s aunt. The doctor said that arguing can increase blood pressure in an otherwise sedentary person; they forget how long they’ve been in one place. They don’t drink enough so they never have to pee,.....just sit.
I’m not sitting here all day long, scowling at the never-to-be-worthies, whose names are now being added to multiple, and misplaced lists.
Wasn’t it someone, now not famous, who said, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste”?
Prevent DVT!!!
These are certainly bad apples.
The abuse, the lack of thought, and the lack of compassion
are chilling.
Some serious prayers for you, just sayin.
How sweet of him to weigh in, when Walmart told the police the same hour the lady was manhandled, they weren’t pressing charges. I’m sure he’ll add that participation ribbon to his resume.
