The Pentagon is considering a historic change in how the military handles sexual assault

This could be huge.

An independent commission could deliver major change to the military’s justice system by removing prosecution authority for sexual assault and harassment cases from the chain of command.

A panel set up by Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, called the Independent Review Commission on Sexual Assault in the Military, has recommended that sexual assault and harassment cases be taken out of the chain of command and given instead to “a civilian-led office of the Chief Special Victim Prosecutor,” the Associated Press reported on Thursday.

The Chief Special Victim Prosecutor would be the one to decide whether or not to charge someone, and whether or not the case should go to court martial. Along with sexual assault and harassment, the independent office could also handle cases of hate crimes, the AP reports. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby confirmed on Friday that Lyn Rosenthal, the director of the commission, delivered an “initial set of recommendations” that “referred to the accountability line of effort.”

“The Secretary will now review the recommendations and consult with service leaders,” Kirby said, adding that Austin is giving the service leaders until the end of May to “provide their candid assessment and feedback of these initial recommendations.”

The move would be a historic victory for lawmakers and advocacy groups who have long held the belief that commanders should not be the ones deciding to pursue action against a service member for assault or harassment. Military leaders have long advocated against the change, arguing it would undercut commanders’ authority and hurt military order and discipline

reply at site said more men reported than women. Finally. However, I have not made up my mind whether good or bad. Feminazi judge or military friendly judge if civilian? Closed military culture? I cannot say.

What say you?

Sexual assault has been a fine military tradition for decades. I guess it’s increasing more and more to the point now where the Armed Forces just can’t handle it.

They are giving up. Letting a civilian inquiry group handle it. Hoo boy.

There can be no doubt that *everything* that the Feels Up/Heels Up Administration does in connection with the Armed Forces is meant to harm the nation...and the Forces.

Coed military was a mistake. We should had segregated by gender like we did in WW2. I have no problems with women serving as long as they’re separated from men. It’s human nature.

The Chief Special Victim Prosecutor would be the one to decide...

What, no Troika? No flying tribunal?

Progressives making progress.

Firing squad for the accused. Court martial is a mere formality.

What if they just... Kept men and women separate? Ya know... Since most of the Army is male, just have men in most units. Just makes sense to me.

Good point. Fits their agenda. Personally I like the Old Testament Army rules. Did you know if you got married you were not deployed the first year? :)

Putting women with men on Navy ships at sea is totally insane.

Doing it on submarines is bats*&t crazy!

Probably not a good idea. Unless it's a ship manned only by females. But that won't work because females do not have sufficient upper body strength. Well, females can serve in segregated units in the Army or the Air Force. But we're so PC that we are not allowed to talk about this.

The current system isn’t working. Even cadets at the academy end up with no action if they are attacked. The command structure doesn’t want to rock the boat.

IMHO this is the camels nose under the tent towards civil prosecution of off shore terrorists and war criminals. Obarko tried this with Gitmo detainees and was roundly criticized. Now they are trying to incrementally get there by starting here, just watch.

How about copying how Congress hides sexual harassment cases by our overlords.

I am ashamed to say so, but the military culture wass rife with every sexual preversion on the planet in my day except rape, pedophilia and homosexuality.
They had family and reasons to be somewhat moral.
This new unmarried force, with no family values, no one to fight for and protect. I cannot imagine what kind of bathhouse activities are going on.
