Athletes who try protesting by kneeling or raising a fist at official Olympic sites will face punitive measures, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced this week.
The Olympic Charter already says that any kind of demonstration or political, religious, or racial propaganda is barred in any Olympic sites, venues, or other areas. But athletes from America and other countries began kneeling protests in recent years, inspired by sports players in the United States.
The IOC Athletes’ Commission examined the matter and found that roughly seven out of 10 athletes of nearly 3,500 polled feel it is not appropriate to demonstrate at Olympic events.
“The quantitative and qualitative findings indicate that the majority of athletes want to protect the field of play, official ceremonies, and [the] podium,” a commission report states.
Any “protests and demonstrations or acts perceived as such” should not be allowed in those venues, Kirsty Coventry, head of the commission, said in a virtual briefing on Wednesday.
Slogans like “black lives matter” also are not allowed.
The commission recommended the IOC provide clarity on the punishment athletes who violate the charter will face. Violations are examined on a case-by-case basis.
The report was full of recommendations, all of which were approved by IOC Executive Board.
Coventry said that athletes will be punished if they choose to defy the rules and protest anyways.
The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee told athletes last month that they would not be punished for raising their fist or kneeling while accepting medals in Tokyo, as long as they were taking part in so-called racial and social justice demonstrations.
The committee defines a racial and social justice demonstration as one “specifically aimed at promoting the human dignity of individuals or groups that have historically been underrepresented, minoritized, or marginalized in their respective societal context,”

There can be no doubt that the Olympics will be chock full of such displays. As a result the Olympics have been added to my “pay no mind” list...along with the NFL,the NBA,MLB....
Actually, since the Olympics aren’t taking place in our woke nation, it is quite possible that no protests will be tolerated. That would be a welcome change.
You might want to rethink again. This is in Japan, and they don’t play that woke stuff.
The IOCC is run by a mostly conservative mostly white and minority conservative board. Athletes may think they have the power in this situation, but they don’t. It’s their game and you had better play by their rules.
They had zero problem with this when Trump was in office. Now that the junta has seized power, they dislike protesting.
Isn't it sad that just 10-20 years ago these sports franchises were the thing to go to and cheer on your favorite team, or watch them on TV, check out the scores in the morning paper's sports section, games you love watching with your kids and/or friends?

How about the police nab them the second they pull crap, hustle them out of the arena, take them to the airport, revoke their visa, and ship them home?

If you want to train for years, sacrifice anything resembling a normal life, reach the pinnacle of performance in your sport, then throw it all away for some momentary and wildly mis-represented "cause"... By all means, let yourself be manipulated into an idiotic gesture.

I have always supported the Olympics even when there was the occasional “protestor”. But, no more. The US Olympic teams no longer represent America but rather represent the Disunited Communist States of North America. I don’t even watch them on TV.
The NFL and all other sports should do this.
