You apparently can only tell for sure by asking what they identify as - at the moment. They couldn’t ask him after he blew his own head off.
That leaves investigators with only the option of making a judgement call based on physical evidence.
I suppose they could reference his social media post. Perhaps that may have stated his most resent preferred pronoun.
