Quality of life plummets, taxes rocket — and New York City faces doom
NY Post ^ | 6 Apr 2021 | Michael Goodwin

“No man’s life, liberty or property are safe while the Legislature is in session.”

That’s how Gideon Tucker — a New Yorker who knew Albany as a former legislator, secretary of state and judge — put it back in 1866.

His wisdom, as demonstrated repeatedly over the ages, is timeless.

Yet there is something different, and especially troubling, about this time. The possibility of permanent decline and the ultimate destruction of the New York we know is unmatched in modern memory.

With Republicans reduced to hecklers, Albany Democrats, oblivious or reckless or both, are marching toward the cliff in an Alfred E. Neuman, “What, me worry?” way. The rising chorus of “Stop!” goes unheeded.

Washington is sending trainloads of money to blue states to bail out their high-tax, high-spend habits. As longtime government guru Dick Ravitch writes in a Wall Street Journal op-ed, “Congress has been generous, allocating more than $12 billion to New York state, $6 billion to the city, $6 billion to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and $9 billion to the state’s schools.”

The state’s take raises the total budget about to be adopted to $212 billion, some $18 billion higher than the fiscal year that just ended. Florida, which has 2 million more people, will make do with spending $97 billion this year.

Ah, but in Albany, it’s never enough. Not as long as the Legislature is in session.

California and New York spend 2.5-3 times what Texas and Florida does. I’d suggest that 2 out of every 3 dollars collected by those states is siphoned off and wasted, “lost”, stolen, squandered, defrauded, or used as payola to contributors and supporters.

I'm sure you're right.

Please stay out. Holy Mother of God do not come here and wreck another state. I know you can not help but vote the same crowd as before. There is no hope for yous.

Its all bullshit, I was in Athens Greece last year, they went broke in 2009. The hotels are cheap, the old Greek Orthodox Churches are beautiful, the Changing of the Guard is cool. The food is great. The hookers are cheap and pretty (my friend said). The Parthenon stands guard over it all.

Nonsense.

I’m discussing this story with my Baltimore friend, and she agrees I was very astute to get out as soon as I saw the handwriting on the wall.

Statistics. I didn’t say per capita you did.
California spends $227 billion. Florida spends under $94B.

I fail to see what per capita has to do with it, same roads and highways just more crowded in California.

Bidets bail-out plan reminds me of a friend of mine in his teen years.

The guy loved drinking and driving, and quickly crashed and destroyed his first car.

His parents bought him another car—which he quickly destroyed in a second crash.

They bought him a third car—same result!

Finally he went off to college in a city where he didn’t need a car...

;-)

The article was published in 2017.

The figures are a little dated.
