Children attending summer camp and swimming pool recreation programs this summer will be required to wear face masks and social distance as part of the Wolf administration COVID-19 mitigation efforts.
Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration on Tuesday issued updated COVID-19 guidance for summer camps, essentially reinforcing health and safety protocol for summer camps, youth summer programs, and public swimming pools. The guidance essentially remains unchanged for the upcoming year.
Staff and children age 2 and older must wear face coverings during child care and summer program activities. Children will be permitted to remove their face masks when they are eating or drinking (spaced at least six feet apart); seated at desks or assigned learning or play spaces at least six feet apart; or engaged in any activity at least six feet apart.
Department of Education Deputy Secretary Matt Stem said that while the guidance remains unchanged, it “doubles down on the importance of health and safety plans being in place in summer camps.”
“Most of those recommendations are similar to last year and underscore the importance of following mitigation strategies and ensuring group size limitations are being met,” Stem said.
Camps may operate at up to 75 percent of their maximum capacity.
The summer camp and pools guidance comes at the heels of newly updated restrictions on social distancing in public schools.
The Wolf administration on Tuesday announced that schools should keep students at least 3 feet apart in classrooms. Previously, schools were asked to keep kids 6 feet apart.
The state’s new recommendations and guidance take effect April 5.
The Wolf administration said it is hoping to help more schools resume in-person learning.
In addition to being required to develop a written health and safety plan that follows the guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control, summer camps and recreational programs are being directed to implement COVID-19 mitigation strategies, including universal masking, physical distancing, hand hygiene, and cleaning and surface disinfecting to reduce the risk of COVID-19 spread.
Other mitigation efforts include:
Limiting group gatherings to the same members and staff providers each day.
Limiting the mixing of children, by staggering playground times and keeping groups separate for special activities such as art, music, and exercising.
Staggering arrival and drop off times.
Adhering to social distancing recommendations and limiting direct contact between parents and staff members.
Public swimming pools will be permitted to operate provided they follow CDC guidance for pools, hot tubs and water playgrounds.
As per the guidance, face coverings should not be worn while swimming or participating in activities that may cause the face covering to become wet, such as when swimming at the beach or pool.
A face covering that is wet may make it difficult to breathe.
The department is directing people to maintain physical distance from others when in the water. People attending pools must wear face coverings while out of the water and maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet from others who are not a part of their household.
DUH!
So why hasn't there been "guidance" recommending ditching dem diapers in the rain?
