As the global drive toward sustainability accelerates, the world’s biggest institutional investors are increasingly looking at the environmental credentials of the companies in their portfolios. The pressure on Big Oil and all other oil firms, coal miners, and even gas project developers is growing to show they can adapt to the energy transition and stay relevant in net-zero economies.
The environmental, social, and governance (ESG) trend is drawing more investors to reallocating capital to sustainable companies and green projects, while capital going toward oil and gas and related infrastructure could become increasingly tight in coming years.
Over the next five years, oil and gas companies will definitely see less investment, Salim Samaha, a partner with Global Infrastructure Partners, an investment fund dedicated to infrastructure assets, said at a panel at the CERAWeek by IHS Markit.
This trend will put further pressure on oil and gas firms to explain to investors how they plan to navigate their fortunes in the energy transition. The ESG trend is also changing the way companies look at future exploration opportunities and projects—they will want to show investors plans for low-cost oil barrels with shorter timelines of returns, alongside measures to mitigate the carbon footprint of those projects.
In an energy-transition world, the oil and gas sector will need to show investors that they are still worth investing in, because of transparent climate reporting, increased investment in low-carbon energy solutions, and clearly set targets to curb their own emissions and the emissions their products generate. So, not every mega oil and gas project promising massive returns will fly in the net-zero pledges.

But seriously polymers can be made from a number of sources oil is only one of them. Methane and ethane is actually the source for most modern plastics specifically from wet shale gas condensate streams. PolyETHYLENE is polarized ethane stripped of two hydrogen atoms and double bonded on a C=C bond. HDPE and LDPE are the two most common plastics high density polyethylene being what pipes, bottles, clothes, food wrap & containers & packaging....
Plastics can be made from ethanol which is dehydrated to yup ethene then polymerized just like any ethene would be.
Methanol, butanol, propanol alcohols can all be dehydrated to their corresponding alkenes and polymerized to plastics.

Every military machine has hundreds of lbs of rubber on them. Fuel lines, engine seals, every single wire made had rubber insulation the use of butanol for rubber won the war for us. To this day most tyre rubbers are butalstyrene synthetics made from the butane/ butene streams of shale gas condensate.

It’s not about technology there are plenty of alternatives chemically to oil and now largely gas its economic shale gas is $3 ish a mmbtu which is ruffly 1000 cubic feet worth fermentation even of wastes can’t compete with that. If gas was $15 like it was 13 years ago then it makes sense to look at ethanol or ABE or one of the other pathways to alkanes or alkenes but humans will never be without plastics again it’s all a matter of price per kg
This is bushwah. Oil and coal have many uses other than as fuel.

The following are two lines out of a letter that the company I work for got less than a week after Bye-Done’s inauguration... by way of background, this was in relation to a contract signed last year for the major rehab of a coal fired power plant....
“I have been instructed by management to put this project on hold. With the recent changes in environmental regulations promulgated by the change of administration of this country, the future of this unit is uncertain.....”
Blah blah, sustainability, blahblahbla.
I worked for a family business once and the elder generation were fairly wealthy and would take a two month vacation every year. I heard the woman say one time; "Jack and I visit many places in the world and in a lot of places, the workers don't have big houses or cars and they seem perfectly happy. Why can't our workers be like that?" Emphasis on "our" that sort of conferred ownership. I heard another incident happened after I had left that place where during a company meeting with all the employees standing right there, she said to her son; "Because they're stupid. That's why we're the employers and they're the employees, because they're stupid" Not one employee walked out. I damn sure would have but I had already walked out months earlier.
That's pretty much how the "elite" think of us. Bunch of stupid worker types that don't deserve to drive a car or have a decent abode.
