The late great Pistol Pete Maravich said he wouldn’t take a hundred billion dollars for what he had found in Christ Jesus.

I hope this poor man felt the same way.

It is worldwide expression now in all languages.

Arkansas is the Osage tribe’s term for their neighbors, the Quapaw people.

They do. And they glide poorly.

Their Glide Ratio, Distance Traveled divided by Altitude, is about 4:1, compared to a small airplane's 11:1 or so.

However, an airplane is still traveling at normal flying speed after its 11:1 glide reaches the ground.

A helicopter can perform an "autorotation" for its "glide". At the end of a properly executed autorotation, smaller helicopters can land with zero forward airspeed and minimal sink rate, i.e. softly.

I've practiced well over 1,000, many "full autos" (to the ground) in Bell Jet Rangers, UH-1 "Hueys" and AD-350B Ecurelle. Those practice autos in the Sikorsky CH-53D were power recovery and not to the ground (full auto) Full auto in the CH-53D will probably shove the landing gear up through the sponsons, but you will walk away.

Better than coming down into a forest or field of boulders, let alone a housing neighborhood, at 50 or 70 mph.

You’re right. But the pronunciation is french-derived (the silent “s” - arkanSAW).
