Rush Limbaugh, conservative radio talk show legend, dies at 70

PALM BEACH, Fla. — Rush Limbaugh, the talk radio host who ripped into liberals and laid waste to political correctness with a merry brand of malice that made him one of the most powerful voices on the American right, influencing the rightward push of conservatism and the rise of Donald Trump, died Wednesday. He was 70.

Limbaugh said a year ago that he had lung cancer. His death was announced on his show by his wife, Kathryn.

Unflinchingly conservative, wildly partisan, bombastically self-promoting and larger than life, Limbaugh galvanized listeners for more than 30 years with his talent for vituperation and sarcasm.

He called himself an entertainer, but his rants during his three-hour weekday radio show broadcast on nearly 600 U.S. stations shaped the national political conversation, swaying ordinary Republicans and the direction of their party.

Blessed with a made-for-broadcasting voice, he delivered his opinions with such certainty that his followers, or “Ditto-heads,” as he dubbed them, took his words as sacred truth.

“In my heart and soul, I know I have become the intellectual engine of the conservative movement,” Limbaugh, with typical immodesty, told author Zev Chafets in the 2010 book “Rush Limbaugh: An Army of One.”

Forbes magazine estimated his 2018 income at $84 million, ranking him behind only Howard Stern among radio personalities.

Limbaugh took as a badge of honor the title “most dangerous man in America.” He said he was the “truth detector,” the “doctor of democracy,” a “lover of mankind,” a “harmless, lovable little fuzz ball” and an “all-around good guy.” He claimed he had “talent on loan from God.”

Long before Trump’s rise in politics, Limbaugh was pinning insulting names on his enemies and raging against the mainstream media, accusing it of feeding the public lies....

I bet when Rush got to the gates of heaven, St. Peter stopped him and while flipping through the book of life he said:

“Rush, Looks like you took out a loan from God for your talent and now that you are no longer on Earth...”

Rush slightly flabbergasted replies back:

“Oh that.... What do I have to do to repay that debt I owe to God?”

St. Peter wryly smiled and said:

“The Talent is now all yours! Because as you know, in Heaven, all Debts are forgiven!”

Rush asked:

“Well now that I am in heaven and I now own the Talent, what am I to do with my time?”

St. Peter chuckled a bit and replied:

“God has a Golden Microphone that he has reserved just for you here in Heaven and you can use it from Noon to 3pm Heaven Standard time if you want it.”

Later that day in Heaven a new Heavenly Radio show started and the host of that radio show was able to say with full confidence:

“Hello everyone, I am Rush Limbaugh coming to you from the Heavenly golden EIB microphone with Talent fully paid off on, from God!”

Rush re-affirmed many of my beliefs that I learned and experienced at a younger age. He was a strong voice for many of us. He will be missed. Rest in peace, Rush. Thanks for your hard work and the laughs through tough times. Your efforts will never be forgotten.

I can almost hear it. “From Gooood.”

OK. I’m getting choked up, again.

Will flags at the White House and across the nation be ordered to fly at half staff?

Rush, you were the first talk show I ever listened to.

You made me see that I was not alone in the way I saw the world.

Thank you.

May flights of angels sing you to your rest.

Rest in peace, Rush. He was formative in my post-college years, helping me see the light and moving me from liberal to conservative. An entire generation of conservative Gen-Xers have Rush to thank for their degrees from the EIB Institute of Advanced Conservative Learning.

I got hooked on Rush during the Gulf War. I was at my desk at work with the radio on and turned low. I heard Rush talking and I was astounded. I had never heard a Conservative voice on the radio who articulated his views so well. There was already a lot of leftism controlling the airwaves, but Rush was different. He was firm and believed what he said with no apologies. Then he played a song/parody. It was Paul Shanklin [I think], and the song was “Bomb, bomb, bomb Iraq” to the tune of Barbara Ann. It was hilarious and I was hooked on Rush from that day forward.

Then in 1993, the saga of Dan’s Bake Sale in Fort Collins, Colorado. A real phenomenon, because of Rush’s show, the interstate highways leading to Fort Collins were jammed up that Saturday for the sale. This took place during Bill Clinton’s presidency, and was a fore taste of the 1994 election when the GOP took over control of the House of Representatives and Newt Gingrich with his campaign to change America, became Speaker of the House.

The country had changed forever.
