If you really want to go tinfoil, the US figured out how it worked (the spying) early on, and simply took the feed too.

Remember how every German spy dropped into the UK during WWII was turned (firing squad or you work for us)? Planting misinformation is very, very important. Operation Overlord depended heavily on it.
