US Voices Support for Taiwan After Beijing Threatens War: Pentagon spokesperson reaffirms United States’ Defense commitment under the Taiwan Relations Act

TAIPEI, Taiwan—China escalated its war-mongering towards Taiwan on Jan. 28, warning the self-ruled island that “independence means war.”

The threat was made during a monthly briefing by Wu Qian, the spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense. He made the remarks while responding to a question about recent activities by China’s air force near Taiwan.

China made its largest-scale military incursion into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ) over the weekend—13 military aircraft flew over Taiwan’s southwest waters on Jan. 23, and another 15 military aircraft made a similar incursion the next day.

According to Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense, such incursions have since been seen on a daily basis, most recently when six Chinese military jets entered the island’s ADIZ on Jan. 28.

An ADIZ is a publicly-declared area next to a state’s national airspace, in which approaching foreign aircraft must be ready to submit their identifiers and location. The area allows a state the time to judge the nature of the incoming aircraft and take defensive measures if needed.

Wu said that China’s military activities near Taiwan were in response to “external interference and provocations by Taiwan’s independence forces.”

China’s ruling communist party (CCP) claims Taiwan is a part of its territory and has never renounced the use of military force to bring the island under its fold. Additionally, the Chinese regime sees Taiwan’s ruling party, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), as an “independence force.”

The DPP traditionally advocates for the island to formally declare independence from the mainland, in contrast to its main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), which leans pro-Beijing.

While Taiwan has never formally declared independence, the island is a de-facto independent nation-state, with its own democratically-elected government, military, and constitution.

Biden won’t stand up to these people. He is owned by them.

Taiwan does not need to declare independence.

It was part of Japan. In 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty Japan relinquished any claim to Taiwan. Taiwan became independent.

End of story.

RE: It was part of Japan.

Yes, but that came because China ( under the Qing Dynasty ) was defeated in the First Sin-Japanese war (1894–1895). Japan therefore annexed Taiwan under their Empire. PRIOR to that, Taiwan was part of China under the Qing Dynasty.

The Taiwanese speak Mandarin ( as well as their native Taiwanese dialect ). Most do not speak Japanese.

I hope Taiwan is not stupid enough to believe we will come to their aid with Xi Biden in the White House.

The only “provocations” I see here are the ones by China against Taiwan. The ChiComs can’t wait for a golden excuse (e.g., a Chinese plane being shot down on Taiwanese airspace in a legitimate act of self-defense) to attack the island.

If the Democrats have no problem shredding their nation’s Constitution, how will they abide by a law they find equally inconvenient?

Which will be first? DC as the 51st US state or USA as a new 24th province of China? Biden as local minister of American Transitional Affairs for China. Biden and Kamala have been visiting Hillary’s tailor for custom designed Mao jackets recently.

Currently: China is divided into 23 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 4 municipalities directly under the Central Government, and 2 special administrative regions.

Not sure what your point is.

You’re also not quite right.

“The Taiwanese speak Mandarin ( as well as their native Taiwanese dialect ). Most do not speak Japanese.”

Taiwanese languages since it began being settled in the 1600’s have been Taiwanese (Minnan, shared with the southern Fujian region of China) and Hakka.

No Mandarin. When Taiwan became part of Japan Taiwanese learned and spoke Japanese in addition to either Taiwanese or Hakka.

After Japan’s defeat and RoC occupation Taiwanese began learning Mandarin in lieu of Japanese as the second language.

Old people speak either Taiwanese or Hakka and Japanese. Although they’re dying off of old age by now.
