'The gaps widen': In hard-hit L.A., Latinos bear the brunt of Covid's surge

... With its sandy beaches and year-round sunshine, Los Angeles conjures up images of celebrities and tanned residents comfortably scattered in a sprawl of roomy single-family homes.

But the popular images of L.A. belie the reality for millions of residents, many of whom are considered essential and live in dense or multigenerational housing at a time when public health officials recommend working from home and maintaining social distance.

Death rates among Latinos in L.A. are twice as high as in the rest of the population, according to public health officials. And Latinos, who are about half of all county residents, are hospitalized three times more often than white people.

"As cases surge, it's very clear and very alarming that certain groups are, once again, bearing the greater burden of illness than others," the county's public health director, Dr. Barbara Ferrer, said Wednesday during her daily briefing. "The surge shows what happens as the gaps widen between the people living in the highest-resource areas and those in the lowest-resource areas."

Despite a regional stay-at-home order, Reyes must report to work every week to maintain health insurance and pay her mortgage, she said. She worries about infecting her mother and what could happen to the family if she or her husband got too sick to work.

"I've lived here 34 years. I've given more to this country than to my home country," she said. "More than anything, I want [local] leaders to see the plight we're in."

Kurt Petersen, co-president of a union that represents hotel and food service workers, said it is "a false choice" for people like Reyes, who is a member of the union.

"They're caught in this horrible decision of 'Do I go to work and risk infection, or do I stay home and risk eviction?'" he said.

Good for them. They will be the first to come out on the other side of this insanity. BTW, cases doesn't mean deaths or hospitalizations contrary to what they hypochondriacs and the power that be want us to think.

Hmm, could it be poor people are often poor because they make poor choices and are less likely to take proper precautions?

Being overweight, having diabetes... seems like I read somewhere that these are risk factors.

I don’t see much news coverage for the single mothers with 16 kids from 65 different fathers.

After 34 years, shouldn’t she’d think of the U.S. as her home country?

Sad news. Dr. Ferrer is NOT a medical doctor. Her Ph.D. is in social welfare from Brandeis. A good taste of the wrong background idealogues try to “run” things.
Has anybody considered the possibility that there are operatives purposely seeding the general population (with covid) during normal human gathering activities (like holidays) ???? Not saying it is so...but is there a possibility?

"Dr" Ferrer... Another "Dr" Jill.

1. She's Puerto Rican, and in charge of the county health care system, so is she critizing herself for not taking care of her own people?

2. As for her title of "Dr", here's what kind of Dr she is...

"Dr. Ferrer has a Bachelor of Arts in Community Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She has a Master of Arts in Public Health from Boston University, a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Massachusetts, Boston and a Ph.D. in Social Welfare from Brandeis University."

Men are much more likely to die of Covid than women. I don’t hear anyone saying men should get priority for the vaccine or stimulus payments. Just suck it up guys you are second class citizens now and have been for a long time.

“housed and treated for Covid and ????!”!
Disease that disappeared decades ago here has seen a resurgence from folks not checked out upon arrival from GOD knows where.
Even in its heyday, Ellis Island checked and if you had disease you were sent packing back from whence you came.

One of My Great GrandDads, his two brothers and their father came over from Germany and were processed at Ellis Island.

Two things happened.

1. The senior Grampa was sent back to Germany for a couple of years due to some lung disease.

2. His 3 sons ended up with 3 different ways to spell their surname.
