Louisiana Rep.-elect Luke Letlow was to be sworn in with his new colleagues on January 3, but he tragically died from COVID-19 complications last month, leaving behind his wife Julia and his two young children. He was only 41 years old and it was a stark reminder of how this virus can be deadly to more than just the elderly or those with underlying conditions.

Now his wife, Julia Letlow, is hoping to fill his seat herself.

“Everything in my life and in my marriage has prepared me for this moment," she said in a statement. "My motivation is the passion Luke and I both shared: to better this region that we called home and to leave it a better place for our children and future generations. I am running to continue the mission Luke started — to stand up for our Christian values, to fight for our rural agricultural communities and to deliver real results to move our state forward.’’

As reported by the Monroe News-Star, several Republican contenders decided not to run in "deference" to Mrs. Letlow.

Fine family with good values. He won with 68% of the vote, so I thank her in advance for her service.

No. Federal reps have to be elected. Senator vacancies can be filled by appointment, but not house vacancies.

Sometimes that arrangement does work.
Didn’t Debbie Dingell of Michigan take over for her late spouse Congressman John Dingell?

I think that only happens when some Senate seat becomes suddenly vacant...

I don’t think the governor gets to appoint somebody to a US House seat...

Sonny was great in the House. Mary Bono not so much.

How many republicans have died in past few months? I’m adding this to my To Do list.

Luke Letlow was a 41 yo new incoming rep diagnosed with Covid 12/18/2020, and dying from it. I don’t know of any possible health probs (do you?), except that he was able to get out and campaign to some extent.

I’d include the young man dating Ga gov daughter who died in auto accident that seemed like a message.

Maybe she is qualified, but in general, having a ring given to you by a qualified person does not make you a qualified person. Does she have any experience? Do we know that her political beliefs matched her husband? There are many cases where wives turn out to be a lot different politically once the husband is gone.

And not to be a stickler — but I thought they had young children, and it seems that having just lost their father, having their mother now disappear for days at a time for congress won’t be easy on them.

I agree. Why should a family member get to take over a seat? I thought we fought a war against monarchy? There is a separate political class that feels entitled to rule.

Yes, she needs to concentrate on her kids, not take on a new job. Those poor kids just lost their dad. They need to have their mom around a lot.

I’m not a fan of this. I’m sure she’s great but too many spouses do this.
