This was a practice much used in the Soviet Union, where persons who appeared in photographs on a reviewing stand, standing at the side of Marshal Stalin, were “disappeared” and their image removed from the record. Later, no record of that person could be found in the archives, or in print anywhere, and even whole families were erased physically and in memory.
A practice that is now in wide use here in the United States in both official and unofficial capacities.
