Free school meals [England]: Mother's 'sadness' at 'mean' food parcel
BBC ^ | 01/13/2021

Chartwells, the firm which supplied the parcel, has apologised.

The education secretary said schools will be able to offer vouchers rather than food parcels from next week.

Food parcels have been sent to pupils in England who would normally be eligible for free school meals while schools are closed during the coronavirus lockdown.

A row broke out after the mother, using the online name Roadside Mum, posted a photo on Twitter of two carrots, two potatoes, a tin of baked beans and a small range of other food items, which she calculated to have cost about £5. The post prompted others to complain about the quality and quantity of the food they had received in similar parcels.

The mother, who is disabled, had thought it was supposed to last 10 school days and should have been worth £30.

Chartwells, the company that provided the parcel, said it was actually only intended to last one school week and had cost £10.50 for food, packing and distribution.

"Public funds were charged £30. I'd have bought this for £5.22," said Twitter user Roadside Mum of the parcel she received

It compares favorably with a lot of the Michelle Obama healthy school lunch fare.

What do you expect me to do with the potatoes, carrots and pasta. I’m supposed to cook these?

However, schools around here, when they were shut down (they’re now open) were sending busses around with food for the kids two or three days a week. When school is in session, breakfasts and lunches are free. Poor students are provided with ‘backpacks’ so they don’t go hungry on the weekends.

I get it; I do. Kids shouldn’t go hungry because their parents are no-account. But the more free food that gets sent out, the more free food seems to be required.

She is bitchin because they charged the government 30 pounds for about 6 pounds worth of food.

Hell that looks like my handcart from yesterday no lie.

That's not the worst selection of 5 pounds worth of food in 2021 Britain. But not a week's worth, maybe a long weekend. If you had couple cans of cheap broth, melt down the beans, potatoes and carrots into soup or stew. Then take the bananas and apples, cut 'em up -- a citrus would really help here -- and mix them into the yogurts with a cheap bag of mini-marshmellows for a divinity-type dessert, maybe crush the candy on top.

I assume this gob is also on the dole, which means if she can put down the cigs and baby sham, she can afford the broth, mini-marshmellows, a naval orange, and a small jar of peanut butter to extend the bread.

As they said, when they got vouchers they could shop sales and make it stretch.

It seems like a valid complaint.

So complaining lady. When I went to elementary school, mom packed a lunch that consisted of a chicken bone from last Sunday’s after-church meal (no meat on the bone...had to stick it to get any flavor) a radish, a saltine, and for dessert, half a teaspoon of sugar wrapped up in a piece of Kleenex.

And this was after walking 7 miles to school, uphill both ways.

I'd have bought this for £5.22

And you are more than welcome to do so and stop sucking on the public teat.

the mother, using the online name Roadside Mum

If that nickname means what I think it means, she must be doing it wrong.

Maybe these families are on the dole because where they worked was shut down for the corona virus restrictions.

And all that food cost the government $35-$40 (30£), which is a waste, too.
