McConnell slaps back Trump — repeatedly
Axios ^ | 1/1/2021 | Mike Allen

Posted on 01/01/2021 9:10:52 AM PST by Alter Kaker

It took four years and an election defeat. But someone with real power inside the Republican Party is standing up to — and swatting back — President Trump: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Why it matters: This is a preview of the power struggle that will define the Republican Party in 2021.

You saw this with McConnell acknowledging Joe Biden as President-elect.

You saw this with McConnell blocking Trump's push to raise stimulus checks to $2,000, which would have split Senate Republicans. And you're seeing it now with his effort to curtail futile resistance by the GOP to congressional certification of Biden's victory.

Yes, but: Until now, McConnell's strategy was buffeted by the chaos Trump created. Now, the Senate leader — whose autobiography is called "The Long Game" — is finally able to set the party's course.

"McConnell is trying to reclaim the role he had in 2009 — leader of the opposition to a new Democratic president," said a Republican operative familiar with the leader's thinking.

What he's thinking: Depending on the outcome of Tuesday's Georgia runoffs, McConnell will have to find a way to protect — or regain — a Senate majority, in the face of Trump and his operatives promoting candidates who could win primaries but might well lose.

During Trump's presidency, Axios' Margaret Talev points out, McConnell gained from an alliance that yielded 200+ lifetime judgeships — including three Supreme Court justices. As ex-president, Trump carries more liability.

The bottom line: Beginning 19 days from now, McConnell is the most powerful Republican in the land.

All the facts regarding the fully bipartisan and ongoing coup have been laid out here for the past 4 YEARS. It’s the GOP sunshine pumpers that don’t want to hear the facts. Horrible damage has been to the MAGA agenda by these deluded voters.

When pressure was most needed on the GOP from the base they insisted all was good and under cut it. Now here we are with Trump’s presidency stolen and all us disenfranchised thanks to the Uniparty coup.

We now know for certain that the pukes surrounding trump and telling the American people they are with him were nothing but backstabbing traitors of the highest order. They not only gave trump the finger they also gave 79 million Americans who voted the finger as well and then turned around and supported the criminal elect. If anything we have confirmed who our enemy is and its not just the rats

did he use the “I was here before you got here and I’ll be here after you’re gone!” line?

That's the premise all these people that have been in office for any period of time believe. Hopefully there will be a few of these newly elected firebrands that will be willing to buck the system and do the right thing.

The GOP-e,like. Fox News, is hoping that after Trump fades from the scene, or is broken by lawfare, Conservatism, Inc., will return to its position 1988-2016, as the opposition to the liberal mainstream. I suspect McConnell cut a deal with Obama not to challenge the Presidential steal.

I don't disagree but Realpolitick insists you look for the advantage, take the advantage, and the advantage right now is not posting Axios pieces but insuring Xiden's puppet-state installation bears the mark of Cain, and that 74 million + know with certainty that the Republic has been sabotaged from within the DC cabal, in order to impose CCP's "social credit" in the US right down to buying the Chinese AI software directly from Hunter Xiden's Chinese company.

I’m sorry, but the Republican party needs to die. I have been one of the people who always shoot down the notion of a third-party. I’ve said in the past that a third-party, rather forming a third-party, only plays into the Democrats hands. But I don’t think there’s an option anymore. I’m not even sure who the hell the republican party as it’s currently constituted represents.

We are about to be subjected to a firehose of bullshit from the GOP...

Mitch is texting me daily, putting the bite on me for GA bucks to save his senate neck.

Flip this is how far the GOP has slipped. Granted the GOP platform excerpt is from almost 100 years ago but the USA was the and still is an industrial power.

Can you believe how our Republican ancestors were so pro working class????

GOP 1924 platform:

We reaffirm our belief in the protective tariff to extend needed protection to our productive industries. We believe in protection as a national policy, with due and equal regard to all sections and to all classes. It is only by adherence to such a policy that the well being of the consumers can be safeguarded that there can be assured to American agriculture, to American labor and to American manufacturers a return to perpetrate American standards of life. A protective tariff is designed to support the high American economic level of life for the average family and to prevent a lowering to the levels of economic life prevailing in other lands.

In the history of the nation the protective tariff system has ever justified itself by restoring confidence, promoting industrial activity and employment, enormously increasing our purchasing power and bringing increased prosperity to all our people.

The GOP is dead. WE NEED A NEW PARTY.
