McConnell slaps back Trump — repeatedly
Axios ^ | 1/1/2021 | Mike Allen

Posted on 01/01/2021 9:10:52 AM PST by Alter Kaker

It took four years and an election defeat. But someone with real power inside the Republican Party is standing up to — and swatting back — President Trump: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Why it matters: This is a preview of the power struggle that will define the Republican Party in 2021.

You saw this with McConnell acknowledging Joe Biden as President-elect.

You saw this with McConnell blocking Trump's push to raise stimulus checks to $2,000, which would have split Senate Republicans. And you're seeing it now with his effort to curtail futile resistance by the GOP to congressional certification of Biden's victory.

Yes, but: Until now, McConnell's strategy was buffeted by the chaos Trump created. Now, the Senate leader — whose autobiography is called "The Long Game" — is finally able to set the party's course.

"McConnell is trying to reclaim the role he had in 2009 — leader of the opposition to a new Democratic president," said a Republican operative familiar with the leader's thinking.

What he's thinking: Depending on the outcome of Tuesday's Georgia runoffs, McConnell will have to find a way to protect — or regain — a Senate majority, in the face of Trump and his operatives promoting candidates who could win primaries but might well lose.

During Trump's presidency, Axios' Margaret Talev points out, McConnell gained from an alliance that yielded 200+ lifetime judgeships — including three Supreme Court justices. As ex-president, Trump carries more liability.

The bottom line: Beginning 19 days from now, McConnell is the most powerful Republican in the land.

We need a Night of the Long Knives for the likes of McConnell, Ben Sasse, and Romney. Revolution is the only answer.

All this talk about a new party or changing your voter registration isn't going to matter folks. If Trump doesn't win, no conservative is ever going to vote again because the system is corrupt and rigged. We will never have honest elections again.

So stop worrying about the ballot box and start focusing on that other box.

LOL. the GOP-E has been "slapping" Donald J. Trump from the moment the shocking 2016 election result was called.

The "GOP Senate" was Trump's #1 enemy for his entire term. From the SSCI-directed destruction of Flynn, to Graham and Burr pressuring Sessions to recuse, to Graham's (and others) steadfast support of Mueller and urging of Trump not to sweat it, to the Senate GOP members repeated mantras that Russia "interfered" with the election, despite zero evidence ever emerging.

“ He’ll be the Senate minority leader on 20 Jan and getting coffee for Schumer”

I have yet to hear a good explanation as to why McConnell dos not prefer to be in the minority. Getting coffe for Schumer.

Uh... you just compared President Trump to Hitler and urged the assassination of three US Senators.

Backs slowly away...

It always amazes me the number of FR readers who do not bother to investigate the author of a piece or its provenance. In this case both the author and his publisher are well known uber-leftists. In this case Allan is whistling past the graveyard, and Axios is pushing him along.

[McFatass just may have destroyed the Repulsican party. ]

McConnell isn’t in a position to do so because Trump has reduced him to a hanger-on. In or out of office, Trump *is* the Republican party.

IF the GOP wins in Georgia Mitch may become powerful.

But do yiou think that Trump supporters will come out and vote GOP in Georgia , after the way Mitch has conducted himself in the last month?

Unlikley.

Mitch is an elitist, a country club Republican who will not accept a redefinition of the GOP as a populist party. That means the death of Mitch’s old GOP.Th34 GOP’s Senate skim trip is over, one way or the other.

Mitch’s presumptuous denial of ordinary Americans , the deplorables,is the last gasp of the GOP, and it will define clearly what the GOP must become.

President Donald Trump, whether he retains office or not, is the new King maker in the GOP, whether Mitch likes it or not.

So McConnell is actually a good guy and a Trump supporter, is that your point?

Oh, no, no, no. No you don't. Don't play dumb. You know as well as we do that Allen is the shittiest agitprop monkey grinder in the entire DC cabal.

And if he thought Mitch was so powerful, why did Mikey write this just the past week, only leaving out McConnell's name.

Senate tide begins to shift toward $2,000 checks after Trump's push

"McConnell lacks heft as GOP members push back on $2,000 stimulus"

This could have easily been the lede, but Mikey had already penned this Friday news-dump stream-of-conciousness nonsense you just posted so he could have the day off, so people like you wouldn't notice Mikey had also wrote an article about "weak Mitch" just. three. freaking. days. ago.

“ Axios is Comcast”

What in the article is inaccurate? Are you saying McConnell is actually a good guy and a Trump supporter?

The article looks pretty accurate to me. I don’t care if it’s from Axios or whoever

"Beginning 19 days from now, McConnell is the most powerful Republican in the land."

Un, no. Not even close. McConnel has a narrow base of voters in his home state, and accumulated years of seniority, and that is all. Trump has a nation-wide power base. No contest.
