The PA Turnpike is in the midst of a $2 billion initiative to reconstruct the entire highway system. Reducing wear and tear will extend the life of the asset, but it doesn’t change the fact that they have an enormous bond debt obligation to meet.
It actually does. Act 44 effectively mandated that the turnpike pay $450 million per year to fund other transportation concerns. Currently, it’s all being directed to public transit systems.
Per Act 89, the diversion will drop to $50 million per year in 2023.
