Taiwan sends ships, aircraft as Chinese carrier passes island

Taiwan’s navy and air force were deployed on Sunday as a Chinese aircraft carrier group led by the country’s newest carrier, the Shandong, sailed through the sensitive Taiwan Strait, the day after a U.S. warship transited the same waterway.

While it is not the first time China’s carriers have passed close to Taiwan, it comes at a time of heightened tension between Taipei and Beijing, which claims the democratically-ruled island as its territory.

Taiwan has complained of repeated Chinese military activity, including China’s regular flying of air force aircraft near the island. China says such drills are aimed at protecting the country’s sovereignty.

Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said the Shandong, which was formally commissioned almost exactly one year ago, accompanied by four warships had set out from the northern Chinese port of Dalian on Thursday.

After passing through the narrow Taiwan Strait on Sunday, the carrier group was continuing in a southerly direction, it added.

China’s Defence Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

China has previously said that such trips by its carriers through the strait are routine missions, often on their way to exercises in the disputed South China Sea.

We will be plunged into chaos if this puke and his crime family and friends gain control. Here is the danger, he will have the military might behind him to squash anything that may come his way domestically and also have assistance from our enemies outside of this country. The clock is ticking while trump is still in power if we allow this to happen we are done

Trump: peace breaking out all over. No major Islamic terrorist attacks. Iran controlled. Loves our military.

Biden: war breaking out all over. Major Islamic terrorist attacks. Iran up to its BS again, financed with pallets of American money. Hates our military.

Any questions?

The major question regarding this conflict is: Ultimately will the people of Taiwan be willing to fight a bitter costly war to preserve their freedom? Or will the communist Chineses succeed in persuading them to Peacefully” reunite with China? If the people of Taiwan clearly decide to fight, then there will be no invasion. The communist Chinese government couldnot withstand the backlash of huge casualities in their army of “one child” soldiers. BTW if they did choose to fight and that carrier were in the Taiwan Strait during hostilities, it would be sunk in less than an hour.

THE PLN ( or any other navy ) would not put one of their CVs in that straight during hostilities. How stupid do you think navy officers are?

China is extremely patient and will not attack Taiwan on Jan 20th of next year or next decade. But what they will need shows of force to get Biden to lift tariffs and undo other Trump doctrine. Biden of course will be more than happy to oblige.

Taiwan will not survive a Biden presidency.

Probably not. And Israel may be forced to send men on a suicide mission to attack Iran's nuclear facilities after Biden resumes Obama's help to the Ayatollahs.

Actually IMHO there are more “battleship admirals” and senior naval officers with similar thinking in most navies. Just where could a big carrier safely commence offensive or meaningful defensive operations in the event of a war like that? Face it, given modern technology, the era of almost all surface combatants is over. The brave sailors on those ships will never know or see the nerd behind a console in a bunker that killed them.
