The proposed class action led by James and Darrell Byrd, brothers with four McDonald’s restaurants in Tennessee, was filed by the law firm representing 52 Black former franchisees who filed a similar lawsuit on Aug. 31.
McDonald’s was accused of placing Black franchisees in undesirable inner-city locations with high security and insurance costs and below-average sales, and driving many away by failing to support them as debts rise and profits fall short.
Jim Ferraro, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, estimated that McDonald’s has 186 Black franchisees in the United States, down from a peak of 377 in 1998, who own “700-plus” stores.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Chicago, where McDonald’s is headquartered, seeks damages of $4 million to $5 million per store, potentially totaling more than $3 billion.
In a statement, McDonald’s USA said it has an “obvious interest” in the franchisees’ success, and invested significantly in the Byrds’ franchises after they encountered difficulties. McDonald’s said it will defend against the lawsuit.

As a franchisee aren’t you responsible for your own actions as with most anything else? You don’t buy a franchise and then told where you’re located.

Let me get this straight ... these guys signed franchise agreements with McDonalds without knowing where the franchises would be located? Isn’t that like signing a contract without knowing the zip code where it’s located or how many bedrooms it has?

I think most get loans whether white of black.
Will they sue the local politicians when their McDonald’s gets burned down in the next riot? I didn’t think so.
FWIW as I understand it McDs sells you a franchise but corporate actually owns the property its on.

McDonalds owns the property. They’re the biggest land owners in the country. Still...why would anyone buy a franchise without being aware of it’s location?
I thought libs wanted black owned businesses in black communities.
If there were only white owners in black communities the outcry would be “whitey making money off the brothers - UNFAIR!”

Yep exactly. After my initial post it dawned on me that surely they knew where the location of the franchise was gonna be. Now they want compensation?

Not only do I not patronize McDs because its so unhealthy, in my experience the quality of the employees leaves a little to be desired....to say the least.
