Supreme Court won't block mail ballots in North Carolina arriving up to six days after Election Day

Earlier in the day, in a defeat for Republicans, the court declined to take another look, on a fast track, at the issue of late arriving mail ballots in Pennsylvania.

The Supreme Court late Wednesday declined to block lower court rulings that allow six extra days for accepting ballots sent by mail in North Carolina. The justices left the later deadline in place, a victory for Democrats in a presidential battleground state.

Earlier in the day, in a defeat for Republicans, the court declined to take another look, on a fast track, at the issue of late arriving mail ballots in Pennsylvania, leaving intact a lower court ruling that said the state must count ballots that arrive up to three days after the election.

The vote was 5-3 and newly confirmed Justice Amy Coney Barrett didn’t take part in the North Carolina case, the court said, for the same reason cited in the Pennsylvania case, “because of the need for a prompt resolution and because she has not had time to fully review the parties’ filings."

The Trump campaign, state and national Republican parties, and Republican leaders of the state legislature said a decision by North Carolina's Board of Elections to extend the deadline, upheld by lower federal courts, had posed "an immediate threat to the integrity of the federal elections process."

The board changed the mail ballot deadline from Nov. 6, set by the state legislature in June, to Nov. 12, explaining that it acted "to protect lawful North Carolina voters from having their votes thrown out because of mail delays that the Postal Service had explicitly warned the state about."

Under the change, ballots still had to be marked and mailed by Election Day.

John Roberts not wanting to appear “too political” again.

So, let’s rule on as many of these things as possible before Amy settles in! — Compromised Roberts and leftist justices.

It’s actually not up for courts to decide this. It’s up to the states on how they conduct elections.

Now GOP poll watchers need to get to postal sorting facilities to make sure no ballots are processed on Nov. 4 or later.

If you’re worrying yourself sick then you’re not trusting the man who seats all rulers of every nation.

Precisely right... it’s all on Roberts. A few of the FReepers with low discernment capabilities think Amy is recusing herself. Morons!

How could any postal employee be so stupid and slow moving as to take 6 days to drive within a few miles of the person’s home to deliver an absentee ballot?

We’d have time to drive across the country on Route 66 and hand deliver it. Aren’t most ballots within the county or a small area beyond? Mine goes around 2.5 miles.

Philly may destroy their voters desire to vote because of the riots.

“Now GOP poll watchers need to get to postal sorting facilities to make sure no ballots are processed on Nov. 4 or later.”

Unfortunately, the postal union would probably object to non postal service employees going into sorting facilities and checking ballots.

She’s not. She hasn’t had time to read all the briefs yet. Unless there is a genuine rush — that the state in question could not resolve election issues according to a decision before Nov. 3 — then they could wait a day or two until she’s caught up.

Well these are the blacks just doing what they always do in Philly...loot and plunder. The Walmart they destroyed took years to get there ...finally it arrived and this is why they don't up near black communities.....The blacks always say they're entitled to do this. It's also why white people don't want to live in black neighborhoods.

Of course, there is the issue of a hearing that took place before she was sworn in. If either of those hearings took place before her swearing-in on Monday, she may be disqualified from ruling on them, no matter what.
