Workers Exhaust Time-Off Options as Covid-19, Child-Care Issues Compound. After workers use up paid leave, they are left with few options

Millions of workers have taken job leave this year because of Covid-19.

With many schools still remote and case counts on the rise, many say they still need time off, but they have exhausted available leave or can’t afford to take it without full pay. And understanding what leave employees are entitled to remains a puzzle for many, employee-benefits experts say.

Dreama James, who works at a fast-food restaurant in Cobb County, Ga., used 12 weeks of leave she was allowed under an emergency plan passed by Congress in March. She took eight weeks in the spring when her son’s elementary school closed and another four weeks in late summer when remote school began.

As Ms. James got close to exhausting her time off, she asked her supervisor if she could bring her fifth-grader to work, suggesting that he could sign on to virtual classes in the restaurant’s closed play area during her shifts.

Her supervisor liked the idea, but higher-up managers nixed it, saying the restaurant was “not a day care,” Ms. James said. She asked about unpaid leave and was told the restaurant couldn’t guarantee her job. Her federally guaranteed time off under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, also known as FFCRA, which paid two-thirds of her $8.50-an-hour wage, had already been hard on her finances.

“I didn’t know how we’d maintain the household bills and get my son what he needed as far as school or someone watching him who we could trust,” said Ms. James, 41 years old. Her husband works an essential job and couldn’t take time off either. She found a last-minute solution when a friend agreed to watch Ms. James’s son until his school opened for in-person instruction.

China got us to voluntarily shut down our economy, and we have a candidate for the presidency who along with his son took money from them. IF we had a responsible and trustworthy media this would be a focus of every media outlet. But we don’t.

I’ve wondered how people with children managed if they couldn’t work from home (and even if they did, how do you work when you should be supervising the kid on the computer). The school won’t take the children, grandparents might not be keen to have them because of the Wu Flu and employers have limited resources and patience.

I scan the news but never found too much on this topic. Maybe one mention for every hundred articles about teachers wanting to stay home and get paid.

“CASE counts on the rise”. We were all played for suckers! Most people are so frightened and uninformed about C19 that the word “case” triggers people to shudder in fear and hold the leg of the politicians.

Uncle Joe Stalin had a cure for unemployment. He was able to eliminate at least 20 million.

Most of my wife’s students are working part or full time. They basically dropped out of school.

At first, most people just went on unemployment.

I know of many who did so.

The docs just torpedoed over half the work force, and from what my wife has told me even the teachers are dropping out.

I’d vote for you. What a simple campaign!

The left really believes this mask and shutdown stuff benefits them politically. I suppose it might in deep blue areas, but the alienation of red or purple state voters is going to be one of the biggest factors in this election.

People instinctively understand that the lockdowns are not working, the mask will not prevent you from getting it, and at some point we have to move forward.

I still go to the office most days. Work from home is doable every now and then.

With a few vacation days left, I’d love a mental health day.

I can’t think of anywhere to go for a short day trip or what to do.

Hell, it’s a bannable offense pretty much anywhere on the Internet except here to even bring up that Communist China had anything to do with the virus. Most places outside of here are gloating that the Communist Chinese economy is the only one in the world no longer affected by the Wuhanic Plague. Seems the world placed its bets on Communist China as its savior.

I will be forced to back on unemployment. No way on God’s Green Earth will I wear a face shield and mask while teaching a face-to-face class for 3 hours at a time. No can do. Even wearing that combo 10-15 minutes gives me all sorts of breathing problems.
