I remember traveling every Summer on the train with my Aunt or Mother or Grandfather heading out to the family farm in Rathdrum Idaho where my grandparents lived. ARound mid to late 1950s. I was around 8 years old.

Train would leave out of Chicago to Spokane. Take about two days.

Dining Car was really elegant with real table cloths, silver ware. We had our own rooms to sleep. Observation car.

Very care free simple times.

I’ve always wanted to travel by train; it seemed so elegant. Never got the chance, except for day trips in CA between Simi Valley and Santa Barbara. Not elegant.

We considered doing a longer trip a few years ago, but after researching people said that Amtrak is a make-work program for blacks. There were a few horror stories of the workers dropping whites in the middle of nowhere at unmanned stations for no reason. Also they’d force whites to switch seats with their friends, even though the whites had reserved certain seats. And don’t even think about complaining!

My bucket list is the Southwest Chief from Chicago to LA. In 1976, I took the Montrealer to Montreal to meet a classmate. In 1982, I took it to Montreal to see a Whalers Canadian hockey game.

Passenger trains in the 60s were great...
