Amy Coney Barrett confirmation: What happens next, how to follow it [excellent account of Senate confirmation process and procedures]

Here’s a look at what will likely happen in the coming week:

McConnell has said he would put the nomination on the floor of the Senate on Friday. McConnell cannot put the nomination forth on the same day it comes out of committee via Senate rules.

When he does put it to the Senate as a whole, he must move the Senate into executive session, meaning that the senators take up that issue alone.

After the nomination is read, McConnell could file cloture – or a measure to end any debate on the nomination – then a day must go by before the Senate can vote on the cloture motion.

Then on Sunday, the cloture petition would be ready for a vote. That vote would curb any filibuster, or debate that would delay the vote on the nomination.

On Sunday, the Senate can begin voting on the cloture petition (to end debate) one hour after the Senate meets.

Once the Senate votes on cloture, opponents may use up to 30 hours on the clock before a final confirmation vote. That means if the Senate votes on Sunday, the final vote on Barrett’s nomination could come as early as Monday.

This is an account of the earliest the various confirmation steps can occur, and in fact, they must occur this way IF the full Senate is to vote on confirmation as Mitch has indicated ...

All those Dems on the Committee who failed to show up to vote against her nomination moving forward, should be denied admission to the Senate chamber on Monday when her confirmation vote is held.

Perhaps I should forward this to my “representatives” in the senate. Looking for the “precedent” clause concerning nominations in election years. Anyone? Bueller?

Have the Democrats formally brought up the fact that she once had pineapple on her pizza yet? I expect this to be their major blow and will need to call witnesses. Yea?

Ya, I thought the new precedent set with Kavanagh, was that we have to hit the pause button and wait for investigations of allegations of sexual misbehavior before proceeding.

“I expect this to be their major blow and will need to call witnesses. Yea?”

no. that phase occurs only in the Judciary Committee, which today passed her nomination out of the committee to the full Senate ... Graham only allowed one day for witnesses last week in the committee and that was it ...

Just heard the Dems have produced an 8th grade classmate of Barret’s who saw her pull a tag off a mattress in 1985. That should be enough to kill it!

She will be confirmed by the Senate on Monday. Hope Collins and her evil twin Murkowski get their heads on straight.

The Democrats are seeing the polls that state the majority want her confirmed. If they don’t show up to vote they can tell their base that stood up for them, and also tell normal Americans that they didn’t vote against her. Win/win for them. :-(

“Ya, I thought the new precedent set with Kavanagh, was that we have to hit the pause button and wait for investigations of allegations of sexual misbehavior before proceeding.”

no. no precedent. that occurred only because that senile old fool, Chuck Grassley, who was the Judicary Committee chair then, allowed it ... the rules set by Graham for the four day hearing last week was pretty much wham, bam, thank you mam, with no other hijinks allowed ... pretty much why the Dems boycotted the final committee vote today, which was the best they could do in terms of “drama” ... and we have Lindsey Graham to thank for all of that ... that is, contrast Grassley/Kavanaugh vs Barrett/Graham ...

“Hope Collins and her evil twin Murkowski get their heads on straight.”

sadly enough, i doubt that will happen ... collins sort of has an excuse because of a tight re-election race, but murkowski has no excuse at all other than that she’s a traitorous k**t ...

If Republicans are in power after November, get rid of these rules. Truman had Court nominees approved same day.

Well, that does match up with her age. Damn, it was a good run!

Funny how the Dem nominees get a warm and fuzzy hearing and a typical 100% vote affirmed.

saying whatever folks wish about Senator Lindsay Graham (and I would agree he was problematical when his friend McShame was with him),
he learned the lesson from the Kavanaugh “hearing” farce about just how stinking low the D’s will go slandering a nominee. And he’s done a good job with this nominee. Thank you Senator Graham for not letting the filthy rotten D’s embarrass the country again in the committee (especially the likes of Sen. Feinstein, a once-reasonable woman gone totally rotten). Good job, Senator Graham, thank you sir.

And now we turn to Senator McConnell to get this fine nominee confirmed ASAP!

Every conservative nomination to the Supreme Court now has a model on how to handle it down to the dotted I’s and crossed Ts.
