Diversity improves among TV actors, but executives still overwhelmingly white and male

* An analysis by researchers at the UCLA College found that women hold only 32.0% of studio chair and CEO jobs; minorities just 8.0%.

* Across broadcast, cable and digital, only 24.0% of credited writers are minorities and only 21.8% of episodes were directed by minorities in 2018–19.

* Representation of women and minorities in acting roles has improved since last year’s report.

* Ratings and social media engagement data show that audiences respond to diversity.

When it comes to gender and racial diversity in television industry jobs, the playing field continues to level for women and minorities, but there’s stubborn structural gridlock at the highest ranks and behind the camera.

Those are among the findings of the second part of the 2020 UCLA Hollywood Diversity Report, which focuses on broadcast, cable and digital programming for the past two television seasons. Part one, which was published in February, analyzed diversity in the movie business, and the authors concluded that the industry’s narrative on diversity was a tale of two Hollywoods. They write that the same is true in TV.

“There has been a lot of progress for women and people of color in front of the camera,” said Darnell Hunt, dean of the division of social sciences in the UCLA College and a co-author of the report. “Unfortunately, there has not been the same level of progress behind the camera. Most notably in the executive suite, there has been very little change since we began compiling data five years ago. That’s very telling, particularly in light of our current racial reckoning.”

Once again, appeasement doesn't save the appeasers.

I think they should focus on not making crap. That would go a long way to improving things.

The same goes for professional sports. White America should sell their teams before the bottom drop outs, and let’s see what affirmative action does to maintain those franchises.

As long as they are 13%, they should be satisfied.

Frozen 2, in which 18th-century Norway was suddenly full of black people, was jumping the woke shark for me.

Yes, what could be more important than “Diversity”.

Any business or entertainment enterprise must include white progressive Democrats, Latino progressive Democrats, black progressive Democrats and Asian progressive Democrats.

Anything else would be an alarming lack of diversity, that’s for sure!

So what? Are we supposed to assume that creative talent is normally distributed? Also, I'm not sure what the total minority population is in the US, but blacks constitute only 13%, so if this is a BLM-motivated comment, we need to fire some of them.

The population of the country is majority white, and less than 15% black.

Why would anyone expect the hierarchy of any organization—short of the NAACP be anything BUY majority white and less than 20% black.

Or are we supposed to lie down and let the minority races take over.

Assuming that intellecutual qualities are a normalized bell curve in all races, they are suggesting that every company dig deeper down the intelligence scale to make sure we have more minorities running billion dollar industries.

Shouldn’t we, as company owners, be looking to get the highest degree of intelligence (however that is measured in an industry) that we can—across the board?

What if professional sports was run that way? The backfield would look very different.

Imagine, if you will, a cable TV channel called "White Entertainment Television."

Imagine an organization called "The National Association for the Advancement of White People."

Imagine a group in the halls of Congress called the "Congressional White Caucus."

How racist would that be?

Too bad we don’t judge the executives on the quality of their character rather than the color of their skin.

Oh well. Maybe some day.

It could well be that since black people are 13% of the population that it would be fair that at least 13% of the casts of film and tv should be composed of people of color. What? You say it is more like 40%? Well, it looks like we need more federal regulation to bring that down to a more realistic representation of the population, wouldn’t you say?

Academics love metrics but quality is hard to measure and cares not for superficialities like skin or ethnicity! Here is a question to ask these twits, who better to emulate as an Hollywood role model, Lawrence Olivier or Cary Grant? The former had SERIOUS acting chops but his fellow English actor is probably better remembered generally and liked better. Where is there a black Grant?
