Columbia report: US could have avoided 130,000 COVID deaths with better response (Shameless Bias)
The Hill ^ | 10 22 2020 | Peter Sullivan

A new report from Columbia University researchers finds that at least 130,000 coronavirus deaths in the United States could have been avoided if the U.S. had responded to the virus as well as a group of other high-income countries.

The report compares the per capita death rate in the U.S. from the virus with six other high-income countries: South Korea, Japan, Australia, Germany, Canada and France.

It finds that if the U.S. had the same rate of death as France, it would have about 55,000 fewer deaths, while if it had South Korea’s rate it would have about 215,000 fewer.

“We therefore posit that had the U.S. government implemented an ‘averaged’ approach that mirrored these countries, the U.S. might have limited fatalities to between 38,000 to 85,000 lives — suggesting that a minimum of 130,000 COVID-19 deaths might have been avoidable given alternate policies, implementation, and leadership,” the report states.

* The report was published by the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University. One of the authors, Irwin Redlener, was named to Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s Public Health Advisory Committee in March to advise on the response to the coronavirus. *

Yeah, if only Trump had listened to Columbia’s suggested response plan back in January.

Oh wait. They didn’t have a suggested response plan back in January. Or in February.

france (just for example) isn’t done yet; it’s locking down now. the rates will even out, if not flip in our favor.

We could have avoided 130,000 out of 200,000 deaths attributed to COVID? So they are arguing now that COVID is far less worrisome than the flu. Good to know.

And the Black Plague could have been avoided and half of Europe saved if they focused on sanitary conditions and killing the rats.

Hindsight is so much better.

What were their plan in February?

The supposed study isn't based on any real data, just a post facto comparison of results. It is just another left wing opinion piece disguised as science.

For example, any study of the spread of an infectious disease has to look at mobility data for the population. Does anyone think that the people in every other nation travel as much as say, New Yorkers? Data published from anonymized cell phone tracking data show that people from New York traveled all over the United States in the critical period, and many of them commuted daily from New York into New Jersey.

The study also puts the blame on the federal government, when it is the state and local governments who should have been doing better isolation, contact tracing, etc. And not putting sick people in nursing homes.

The article itself shows that the Democrats across the country, and the media who refused to support President Trump's team were to blame:

The report states: “Many nations facing the pandemic crisis have put politics aside and orchestrated a response led by public health experts and global coordination.”

It is too bad that Democrats and the leftist media here didn't do exactly that - support President Trump's COVID-19 response team lead by CDC and NIH experts, and move faster to shut off travel instead of criticizing President Trump when he did so.

This study seems to ignore current coronavirus explosion in Europe. The counties which seemed to do the best so far are now the most affected!
E.g. Czech Republic implemented drastic measures in March and was about the least affected by virus until recently. For long it was given as an example of how to deal with the virus. Now it has the worst flarup anywhere! Basically, after delaying the virus for about half an year, it is catching up with Sveden now!

If ifs were fifths we’d all be drunk.

none of those countries have the population and area of the U.S.

Would the U.S.have had 130k fewer deaths if COVID deaths were properly counted ?

Exactly. I agree with the sentiment of the headline, but vast majority of the failed US response came from the governors of the individual states. President Trump was there behind all of them supporting their authority to decide what was best for the people of their own state and the president did all he could to give them whatever they asked for. Even Governor Cuomo was praising President Trump for the help he got.

But many of the governors screwed up their response so badly that their terrible policies cost many thousands of lives. Some of their policy was so bad it seems like it should rise to the level of criminality.

Actually true in that if a handful of Dem Governors had been prevented from sending the infected back to nursing homes the death toll would be much lower.

That's the report? That would take me 30 seconds to write.

CDC today issued a report stating that 130000 or more deaths counted as COVID were known to be from other causes. Noted that the financial incentive to report deaths as COVID was the reason why so many were misreported (lies). Scamdemic from the start.

Forced complete lockdown. I mean complete lockdown, woulda stopped it till next cycle. But everyone would die from other diseases and starvation.
Wonder why the brave intelligent souls at Columbia didn’t enlighten the world earlier....and waited till about 2 weeks before an election.

A new study by me says that 130,000 COVID reported deaths were deaths by other causes.

Only the US wants to look like things are worse than they really are, all the other ones undercount COVID, we count every death as COVID.
